looking to change my car but no joy in finding a diesel auris or corolla, starting to look at both in petrol, would I be mad, are they expensive to run? looking at a 2007 or 2008.

they aren't great on petrol. i only ever got late 30s.

If you are buying a 1.4 vvti petrol auris make sure it's a pre July 08 registered example. Cars were taxed on the co2 system after this point. The Toyota auris on the older cc system is €385 tax per annum. On the newer co2 system it's €570 to tax per annum, which is a significant difference imo.

If you can stretch to a 2009 UK imported petrol Auris it will have the newer 1.33 VVTi engine, it's more powerful, more fuel efficient and has cheap motor tax.

What type of driving do you do? If you're doing a lot of motorway driving then diesel are really efficient, but they're really not suited to lots of short trips or city driving.

I bought petrol specifically because I only occasionally take long trips. Not sure the size of my tank, but it costs between €55-€60 (depending on the price of fuel) for a full tank and I get aprox 750k's per tank, which i think is pretty good.

My car is a 1.2, 110BHP Golf 2015. Given the recent scandals at VW, I'm glad I didn't buy diesel!

I'd be very surprised it this ends at VW!

I have the 1.33 auris that is 280 euro to tax. It averages between 38 - 41 mpg around town etc. They are very sluggish though, overtaking has to be planned but they seem reliable.

Same here, but to be honest VW were doing their customers a favour.

The first generation Auris is a vile car. The Corolla that preceded it is far better. Else look at anything from Ford, VW, Skoda, Opel, Citroen, anything else other than a first generation Auris!

I haven't seen report of other makers using defeat devices, but seems most makes are coming under scrutiny for pie-in-the-sky emissions numbers. It's a very open point whether this is more broadly a testing problem than a manufacture problem: but testing specification was heavily lobbied by the makers so they cannot fully absolve themselves even in that case.

I wonder if this is leading up to a raft of large scale scrappage schemes across western markets, as part of economic stimulus and auto-industry subsidy.

It's a difference of exactly €185 p.a. So just factor that into the purchase price (e.g. if buying it now, and you could get the slightly older one (H1 2008) for €555 less than the newer (H2 2008), then you're break-even for 3 years (in fact even better than even as you save the €555 now but pay the higher tax in installments)... assumptions include that tax stays the same, that resale depreciation costs are even etc.,)

My wife had an 08 petrol corolla from new till about 6 months ago. She was getting 39-40 mpg or just over 14 kms/litre from it. Never had anything major wrong with it other than an accelerator issue which was sorted under warranty. The newer 1.33 litre engine is supposed to be better and comes with a 6 speed box.

My wife has a 2010 Uk spec Auris TR with the 1.3 litre petrol engine. It's a lovely car, well spec'd and vet comfortable to drive. She's getting 44mpg on her daily 20km commute (10km each way)

She had an 08 1.4 petrol Ceed before it and it was doing roughly the same MPG but they're not as refined as the Auris. The ride is considerably harder and the car isnt as well Screwed together and the engine is much rougher sounding and louder.

I have the same spec Auris, do you find yours very sluggish especially when cold?
