Celica: High emissions

My Toyota 01 1.8 Celica 140bhp has failed its NCT on emissions four times. At this stage, everything has been changed inc sensors, cat, air filters and all obvious stuff.

At one test high idle was ok and low idle was high...another test showed exactly the opposite. We are talking three times over limits. All tests were done at a garage and smoke checked out ok before NCT and with different smoke detectors. Appears to change from the time we check it to the time of NCT.

Any idea as to where I go from here would be much appreciated.

Could it be your sitting in the car with engine running in traffic or outside the test centre and this is giving a heavier reading at the test centre?

Perhaps get an middle of the night appointment where you can be more generous with the power on the drive in.

Can you post the actual readings from each test? Is yours fond of oil?

It uses about a litre every 5000 miles toyotafan. Will try attach tests. Beginning 2 think now it maybe the cat as I'm not sure what type it is and it definitely isn't a genuine 1.

I have heard of several bad experiences with spurious cats.
    The cheaper ones in particular.

Any OBD codes? If 'twere I, I'd roust up a good second-hand OE cat and clean the throttle-body with a toothbrush. Don't worry about that amount of oil consumption.
