Hi lads and ladies, I'm in the market for a diesel car and I like the looks of both of these.
I'll need diesel for the milage I'll be doing and if I'm honest I just prefer driving diesel.
Anyway my question is which car would you choose and why?
I've around €4000 to spend so years wise I've seen was between 04-07.
Oh and I've heard the 1.6 focus give bother ture?

The VW diesel engine would be better but I prefer the interior setup of the Focus from those years.

The Golf has a better selection of engines and slightly less depressing interior.

When I was looking to change last year I drove a Focus and hated it. The interior was terrible. The dash kneecapped me getting in, the centre console robbed a load of space and myself and the father were "well packed" in there when we sat in the front. The dash button layout was terrible, very button heavy.

The drive wasn't much better. It had hard suspension for a "sporting drive" but it too damn hard down a bumpy road. The suspension seemed to me to be ideal for going "full on" but for travelling at reasonable speeds on Irish roads it was too hard and uncomfortable.

id be pro the golf and vw over the focus , ive had both but petrol.
The golfs are feel better put together, less squeaks and rattles from the interior. The golf braked way better too
my focus burnt tyres, tracking and camber were in spec but as the tyre man said there isnt a ford in the country not burning tyres, The golf did 60k miles to a set at one stage .
regarding engines the golf in those years came in the 1.9 and 2.0 tdi both fairly bullitproof
The focus 1.6 is widely known for issues , though people will argue that its down to lack of servicing, personally i believe a lot of irish cars are underserviced , the attitude is shur send it for the nct and see what it fails on and fix that.
the 1.8 is meat to be the best , the 2.0 was known for injector issues.

I have a friend who has a 1.4 petrol 05 golf and a 08 1.8tdi focus and would agree with my opinion, he prefers to drive the golf, nicer to drive and better put together

I have owned both a 2007 focus and golf and I wouldn't even put them in the same league the golf is far superior IMO. I found felt way better put together, was cheaper for parts (VW OE compared to Ford OE), nicer to drive and better engines. The main thing against the golf is its higher price and the quality of one your going to get for 4K euro chances are you would get a newer more lower mileage focus. Id still be going for the golf.
