German trying to get car insurance in Ireland

    Hey folks.

I have a colleague from Germany who's recently moved to Ireland and he's trying to buy a car in Cork. He's found the car he wants but he's having fierce trouble getting insurance for less than the value of the car :) ....i.e. less than €2-3k.

The problem is he's new to Ireland and can't prove he has a no claims bonus. He hasn't live in Ireland long, has a German licence but hasn't owned a car in Germany for a few years. He lived in South America for a few years before moving here and never needed/wanted to drive there.

All the insurance companies he rang today are treating him as a first time driver with 0 no claims bonus and looking for €2-3K.

Does anyone know of an insurer who might be able to help?

    Cheers!

I moved here from Germany 4 years ago under much the same circumstances (long term license holder, no recent NCB). One Direct had a program where I could take a "driving assessment" with Aviva and save up to 50%, which dropped my insurance to a more reasonable number. (I think it may have also been a requirement of even getting insurance on a 1.6+ engine.)

Echoing this. Have used them many years, and never had a problem. Insurance was underwritten by AIG, who also provided all the paperwork. Good thing is that they had a flatrate (480 USD a year, IIRC), so I didn't have to worry about Engine size etc.
