Can anybody tell me is it possible to sheep insurance and who does it.There has been a number of sheep kills in my area lately and I feel it something I need to to consider.I would be looking for this as a stand alone policy .

FBD, not overly expensive is risk is high but need to catch dogs from memory

Does that mean if you don't catch the dog you have no cover. As I don't have or never will have a gun I know there is little or no chance of me catching the dog.Is insurance any good in this scenario ?

Just had FBD rep. here the other day pricing farm insurance.
Think it was costing 200 euro per year covering you up to 4500 loss. She was unsure if that limit was per year or per attack.
Know that it only covers loss up to 7 days after the incident as far as I understood it ie ewes aborting after a month wouldn't be covered.Think it basically covers direct losses due to the dog attack only.
The cost looks good if dog attacks are a problem as 4.5k would cover say 30 plus lambs or 20 ewes plus vet and knackery fees on average. That would be a fair amount of damage in any one attack.
Think I priced Aviva and Zurich a couple of years ago as well but at the time both they and FBD were prohibitely expensive for this cover as it was only being offered on a total flock basis.Unsure if Aviva or Zurich now offer something similar.

On a linked note FBD came back almost 250 euro dearer for farm and house insurance here this week than Aviva.Zurich were even dearer than FBD by another 300 euro.
That's with all 3 quoting from last years policy document for exactly the same cover.

If you get the dog ya get the owner
    Shoot the dog
    Inform the guards
Keep an eye for lost dogs fitting the one ya shot
Take that info to the guards and if they don't do anything raise hell ifa local media
And claim off the dog owners pet/home insurance

Thats the ideal but from bitter experience getting the dog is the easy part.Gardai are pretty good and understand the situation but in many cases their ability to do anything is limited.
Local media helps but only if dog owner is anyway responsible or even cares. It raises awareness for a week or two but after that people forget.

As regards the insurance;haven't got it and most prob. won't as my dog problem seems to be solved for the moment!!!!
If FBD allow an unlimited no. of claims per year of 4500 each time then looks good value at 200 euro if you are having major problems but would wonder about say claiming 10 times in one year.Could see cover dropped or premium raised pretty soon.

Would have been ideal here in 2012 to 2014 as both myself and 4 others had a serious dog attack problem.Cost me in the region of 8 to 10k all in.Couple of neighbours had serious problems also and another couple single instances of worrying and attacks.
As to rented ground would imagine shouldn't be an issue as long as you state where you will be grazing the sheep.
Only way to find out is to ring up and cost it and then see if its worthwhile.Everyone's situation differs so really depends on the individual farmer.

Got a €200 qoute from FBD same as Paddy for sheep cover for my renewal due latter this month. Lost 30 ewes to dog attacks here a few years ago over a couple of years. Getting dogs is half story. One attack saw dogs and knew were neighbours (people moved into the area) swore blind not theirs could do nothing. Another attack shot dog not chipped so not traceable again knew who belonged to they denied it and said there dog had died earler that week! IMO all dogs need a passport/tagging from birth.

Fact land rented should make no difference. Not know if offered as standalone mine comes as part of FBD Multiperil policy
