    Hi,
i did read previous treat but I m still confused...
GPS is a piece of technology I really don't use...

I would have wi-fi on my phone only where a wi-fi network is available...
so at home before leaving to work and then in my work place

so.. considering I m spending most of the morning in traffic.. would the app read that at 8am takes me 25/30 minutes to do 8 Km (journey home to work) and so I m driving at 20 km/h?

and when I ve not wifi available (like saturday morning going shopping) the GPS won't be able to tell location without data?

i guess so, but you don't really need an app.

you just use the clock and speedometer. 30 mins to do 8km = 16km/h.

edit: is this some kind of insurance tracker app? if so, you'l need mobile data for to use it in the car.

thank you both guys and i apologize in advance , i m a bit tick when comes to GPS..

I get the app > Ok, from googlePlay
the app GPS does not need data to work?
once I get the connection the app sends information on my driving to AIG?

GPS is stand alone, and does not need any data to work.

So the app will either ask you to turn on location services or do so automatically and then proceed to log your driving using only GPS. When you get to work/home and connect to the web again your phone will upload this data to AIG.

    Hi guys,

while writing a message here, I sent an email to AIG.. here is what I got back from them:

    "Many thanks for your email.
I can confirm that in order for the APP to work it does require mobile
    internet.
The APP will not be able to monitor your driving without it.

Sounds like a poorly written app or it is doing something more than it is claiming to be doing.
Do they have some 24hour monitoring team reading live data and saying decades of the rosary for you when they notice heavy braking? No.

I can't see why it wouldn't work just as OSI and Alanstrainor described - ie use GPS for recording speed/location/acceleration for a journey and then upload that journey's stats as soon as mobile data or wifi is available. Can't see the benefit of permanent mobile data. What happens if some of your journey takes you through a blackspot- are you deducted "points" for this?

    Ah, typical insurance company ambiguity.

    Their own website says

How often does the App send data?
The App will send data throughout your journey. If it can’t, then it will save it and send the journey data next time you connect to either a 3G/4G mobile network or via Wi-Fi. Network data costs will vary by network, but may be covered by many contracts. We are not responsible for any data charges that you may incur for using the AIG XLNTdriver App. Please consult your own network data provider for advice regarding any costs that may be incurred. If you like, data transmission restrictions can be applied in Preferences to restrict data uploads to Wi-Fi only.

Moral of the story, as always, is "NEVER EVER believe anything told to you over the phone by someone working in insurance"
