I've been doing a postgrad for a few weeks and I hate it. I've just tried contacting other colleges to see if I can transfer but they've all said it's too late. The reason it's bothering me is because I want to get a visa and my work on that has to be directly linked to my postgrad. I don't even want to work in the industry this degree is in. I feel stuck, I'm not going to be able to afford to do this again so this was basically my one chance. I don't fancy sticking out a masters that I honestly have no passion for or interest in (it's be just like school except I'll be paying thousands for it), and I really don't like the college either. I'm really lost and upset, I don't know what to do.

Hi op, I can relate to you in that I always hate change and it can cloud your judgement I think, rewind 3 years, I was starting a post grad in a new college, I hated it for the first few weeks, looking back now I think it was just the change I hated, not the course I was doing, as the course went on I started to really get into it and enjoy it and by the end of my 2 years doing the post grad, you couldn't drag me out of the place, of the 6 years I did in college, the last 2 doing the post grad were by far the most enjoyable.

During my 1st year of college I "hated" the people I lived with but again it was just the change that was making me look for an excuse to go back to what I knew best, my family home, by the end of 1st year I was really good friends with my house mates who I couldnt stand at the start of the year.

Give it a go and see who you are getting on in a couple of months.

Have you spoken to your college? You might be able to move sideways within the college to another Masters? Maybe something else within one of the schools you are involved in?

Talk to your college. There is usually a period of time in which you can withdraw with no fee penalty. Not sure how it would affect your visa but means you could afford to do something else next year.

before you make any decisions, talk to the course leader/counsellor in college. it could be that the first few weeks are a little overwhelming and it's just time and a chat that's needed. it could be that the course is not for you. in the end that's a decision only you can make and if it comes to that, remind yourself it's the right decision and move on. don't let it upset you more than it should. good luck

A close friend started an MA in Ireland last year coming over on a student visa. From the beginning it was the wrong postgrad to do , definitely not suitable for an international student etc ( a lost of the modules referenced cultural, cinematic, religious themes that were totally... well .. foreign)

There was serious consideration to quitting it ( despite not having the GNIB card yet)

I cannot over emphasis how inappropriate, and overwhelming this Masters was.
I can however advise that he completed the MA and seems confident on his submitted theses, overall he managed each module and by Christmas was more confident, only to find Semester2 module options were equally not good and ones he had no knowledge base for

I guess my point is , if you can persevere, and push , I really mean PUSH for advice help in the college ( I felt they got their money and was less interested ) . At the same time only you know best what you can cope with. (I was going to say he was close to cracking, but the reality is probably that he did crack, and just had the benefit of some personal support )

My understanding is that there is a cut off point before you can't get some of your fees for the first semester back.

Talk to your department, get financial advice from your students union or citizens advice, try to get as much perspective on the situation as possible.

Don't force yourself to do something that is a waste of time, that you hate and you don't want a career in. There are always alternatives, I know you can't see them right now but there are always second chances.
