Long story short....we have a Grand C4 Picasso 1.6 HDI VTR automatic, lowish mileage (55k) and in decent condition body wise. Have had it 18 months and its been in for major repairs 4 times. Twice via the dealer we bought it from for EGR and some other issues with sensors that the dealer payed for and 6 weeks ago the turbos went out of the blue and we were stung for 1200 yoyos.
Last week turbos went again but are covered under 12 months warrenty.
Due to collect it from my local garage tomorrow and we just want rid of it now.

Not sure what price we will get for the Citroen but it will be in perfect working order when we get it back but we just don't trust it anymore. (We really liked the Picasso as space wise and comfort are great)

So looking for recommendations for a 7 seater in and around 10k.
We don't need diesel as mileage would be about 100km per week
Need 7 seats as 3 kids and granny are regular passengers!

Have spotted some Toyota's Avensis Versos and also Corolla Verso so would like thoughts on those reliability wise. Also I hear Mazda are decent.

Not at all car wise so would appreciate thoughts.

We bought a '07 Corrolla Verso last year. Unfortunately the clutch failed about a month later. cost about 800 bucks to fix it, but since then, we've had no problems.

The MMT takes a little to get used to as it's not quite the same as an automatic, but it's okay.
Plenty of space. The three back seats can individually be moved back/forward. I'm not sure this is the same as other MPV's. It's fairly handy.
The MMT IMO gives us pretty good mpg too.

We have a Mazda 5 that my wife drives and loves, its a 08 1.8 Petrol and its not too bad on Petrol.

When we were buying we looked at the Corolla Verso but discounted it as there was more space in the Mazda 5. The Mazda though is a 6 seater, the middle seat in the middle row is narrow but folds away to make a passage into the rear most seats, which have plenty of room.

The boot with all the seats up takes our small buggy too which is a plus.

A friend of mine is on her 2nd Avensis Verso and loves it, older car now though as youngest I think is 2005.

It's really disappointing to see high repair bills for near all models and there seems to be a bit of random luck involved.
We had the C4 Grand Picasso also and had four years 120k km's of near trouble free motoring. In the same time our friend had a Ford C max and had awful trouble. Another friend has a Sharan and it's far from cheap to run as it's a Petrol and the dual mass fly needs doing now. Modern cars are very soft compared to their counterparts from 20 years ago and it can be very frustrating.

We traded our C4 GP and the guy was ok on the trade, as he said the sell on easily enough even with high milage.

Very little space compared to something like OP has already. Rearmost seats in the Quashqai are horribly small. I even looked at the new xtrail 7 seater and the rear two seats are like doll seats with just a few inches from the seat to the floor. They really only suit a very small child.

Brother in Law has had the Qashqai+2 and now has X-Trail
(X-Trail is great and has lots of gadgets like auto closing tail gate and the touch screen to post to Facebook while your drive....aghhhh) and yes the back 2 seats in the X-Trail are a joke
Qashqai+2 was ok but maybe a bit small but worth looking at for sure - are they reliable at that age and mileage?
Its a bit over budget and the fact its diesel scares me as we have had endless problems with the current diesel car. We have a petrol Audi A3 and its never given engine issues. Also had many a petrol car prior to that and the only issues worth mentioning would have been clutch, timing belts, brakes, etc so I think for the mileage we do a diesel may not be worth the hassle, plus its filthy for the environment (so I hear!)

    Thought that was the idea...

It never struck me as a true MPV like the Grand Picasso.

With 100km a week, you almost certainly don't need/want a diesel. Fuel efficiency will never pay back and as most of it is probably town stop/start driving and short runs anyway (unlikely to be one trip of 100km!), the engine and things like DPF won't be happy either as they won't get the long motorway runs they need.

To be honest, though I don't know a 7 seater variant (and they're too expensive still), at 100km a week you'd be best off (purely technically) with an electric vehicle, single charge would carry you through most of a week and they're clean, quiet, and play nicely with stop-start/town driving.

Not gone on the Renault - and with it being diesel I am loath to think we will inherit more issues that its worth

Electric would be nice but maybe only for a city runabout.
We live outside a city and the travel we do is back and forth to my work (about 15km per day) and the odd day wife takes the car to work in the city. we travel a bit at the weekend so maybe we would hit 150km per week in total. Thats why I am thinking petrol is the way to go.
We need to have a decent size as we have 2 youngsters, a teenager and a granny to ferry about!

Have spotted this - any thoughts appreciated - http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/toyota/avensis-verso/used-2007-toyota-avensis-verso-7-dublin-fpa-171114337810158550

Also looking at 7 seaters in recent weeks.

We have a 1.6 diesel grand c-max - size wise it's perfect as we have 2 toddlers & occasionally need to use the 2 seats in the boot, it's got sliding doors for parking which is a blessing with the kids, the only downfall is the engine is a bit slow for overtaking and long motorway journeys. If we get another we are getting bigger engine.

The new Grand cmax is lovely with 125bhp which should give it a bit more power however the price is nice too, so saw the new Kia Carens which is about 4K cheaper than the ford. It also has cruise control, parking sensors, nice interior, decent 1.7 and 115bhp on the EX model plus a real wheel, anyone had one ? Just worried the re-sale value will be bad ?

Also looked at Peugeot 5008 - pricey but nice but it only has an inflation kit ?

Didn't like the Toyota verso - very plastic finish & inflation kit ?
The C4 was all glass and just didn't like the feel of It driving ?

So any reviews on the Kia Carens would be appreciated ?

Need some serious advice from anyone in the know.
C4 is still in the garage..... Almost 3 weeks now. Can't get to the bottom of the issue. Turbos replaced, fuse box replaced, DPF filter thingy flushed??? Still warning lights on dash and no power to engine. It's going to be towed to main dealer now but I don't think they have a clue either.
We are taking turns at getting trains and using bike to get to work but not substantial az we need to get kids to school and child minders etc.

Need a bit if advice on reliable 7 seaters for sale in the 10k to Max 12k budget. And that will be assuming the C4 can be traded in for about 6k of the price.
Not even sure I will get that price to be honest.

    Help needed

    Do you need 7 seats or 6? 3 kids + granny = 4, +2 adults = 6.

    Honda FR-V !!

100km a week? Any wonder you were getting EGR issues.

Interesting - I have never seen one of those before but it looks like a decent option. Thanks
I will go look at one over the weekend and see if its suitable

    any other options?

I have one myself and must say its a great car altogether.
Well built, reliable, smooth, not as big as 7 seaters, so basically like driving a normal car (very slightly wider).

Normal boot even when all 6 seats are in use, a lot of 7 seaters have little or no boot when seats 6 & 7 are being used.

Only problem is that I cant see Granny sitting in the middle front seat. Looks like its not quite a full seat size (which she needs!!)

So car is still in for repairs - 4 weeks later
public transport and the other small car we have is working ok at the moment with the weather being fine and dry so we are going to suck it up and just try it out for a little while more

The plan is to get the C4 in working order and then sell it ASAP - privately most likely but maybe even a cars for cash type deal would do also.

as there is very poor selection at the monment we are going to try to wait till early in the new yaer to see if there is better stock available

We are now keen on a Prius as we do relatively low mileage and have had a look at size and after much discussion we can maybe leave granny at home on the odd occasion!!
The size of the Prius is great and it looks like a real reliable option

    any comments on Prius?
what about this example? - http://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=1314136&r=s.php%3Fm%3D88%26o%3D747%26g%3D0%26z%3D4

There is a new Prius coming out so there might be some quite a few trade-ins about to hit.
    Not sure of date.

This thread seems close to what I'm looking for so thought I'd add some questions rather than start a new one! I'm in the market for a 6/7 seater in the next couple of months and want to know my options. One critical thing I want is a spare wheel, even if it's just a space saver. I have an S-Max company car at the moment and have been cursed a couple of times with punctures and kids in the car which can only be towed away! So discounting the S-Max here are the ones I've found. Can anyone confirm if any don't have a spare wheel?

    Citroen C4 Grand Picasso
    Ford Galaxy
    Niassan X-Trail
    Renault Grand Scenic
    Opel Zafira
Mercedes E-Class Estate (prob out of budget though!!)
    Mazda5
    Peugeot 5008
    Opel Zafira

Any comments on which might represent best value for money if I'm looking in the €10-20K bracket? Top needs are reliability, spare wheel, gadgets :) and I guess fuel economy. I don't mind if the extra seats are pokey as it'll just be for the odd time that we need them.

Renault Grand Scenic doesn't come with a spare wheel, just a wheel inflation kit, but there is space to hang a spare underneath the boot.

Great thanks! I read similar about Grand Picasso today too. Sounds like you just get a kit with bolts and there are holes in the base of the car already for kit?

Yes, that's correct. The car normally just comes with one of those tyre inflation kits. I've used it twice, first time was no problem, second time was dodgier, tyre side wall was shredded by a large bolt that I drove over, but it still got me home, but I'm glad that it was a short distance and that I was living beside a garage.

    caution
Citroen C4 Grand Picasso has no spare wheel and to my dismay not even a tyre inflation kit on certain models or its missing on 2nd hand cars too

Also we have found reliability to be appalling on our C4 (maybe we just got a lemon of a car but friend has a 2015 C4 and its broken down twice already having to go back to garage both times - fuel pump and also some sort of hydraulic issue)
Its a real shame as the car is nice to drive, comfortable and has lots of extras and nice touches but it is not worth the hassel in my opinion

We have a Zafira on loan at the moment and thats really boring and basic but it seems to be perky and reliable so there is that side to it but I would not buy one if I had the choice

Thanks yeah as per posted above though I think you can get an add-on kit to put a wheel underneath. That said, the reliability comment doesn't fill me with optimism!!!
