There is a serious furore on their Facebook over this and when you look at the video they published of an apple rolling into a glass it is clear there is something amiss. Like the video was dubbed with noise layered over it or something.

Add in the overly complicated explanation by their CEO on their website and something isnt adding up here guys. Will we see a BAI investigation into this?

It's too far-fetched for it not to be fixed. They should never have gotten involved with that Keith Barry chap, the swine cost me a tenner before. I hope someone puts in a complaint, it's a insult to the intelligence of listeners.

At the risk of getting another warning .......i feel that anyone who still listens to Nova deserves to be insulted.....:)

I forgot that Keith Barry "predicted" the name of the winner too. What a farce!

I found this on the Nova website. To paraphrase the Bard ""The lad doth protest too much"

    Hello everyone

I’d like to make some comments about the recent NOVA Noise content, which saw Katie O’ Neill from Artane win a whopping €8,500 earlier this week.

We had great fun with the Nova Noise over the last 6 months, with over 70,000 people trying to play the contest over the 6-months that it ran.

There are many things being said about the Noise including (but not limited to):

It’s not an everyday noise and was impossible to guess

The noise is not real and the audio was dubbed over the video

The apple is not rolling “into” the glass

It is not a pint glass

The answer should have included that the apple rolled on a glass table

Keith Barry proves it was a scam

When we decide to run the NOVA Noise each time, we go through a process of recording several noises on video (using an iPhone) and then choosing which sound we feel will give the best run of the competition. There are several criteria including; It has to be done using everyday objects, it has to have been easily created, it has to be somewhat difficult and it has to be easily guessed with a few short words. We never claim to make it easy – if we did, it would only run for a few days, like one of our previous ones.

In this case, I, personally, recorded the NOVA Noise on my iPhone 6, in my dining room, in my home in Leopardstown. It was the evening before the new NOVA Noise was due to start and I needed to record a sound. I had recorded the previous one in one of the bedrooms at home (that was the one hangar being put on a door) so, this time, I went into the kitchen and tried to record several noises using a glass and items that I could find. I tried dropping a battery into a glass of water. Too easy! Dropping my Sky remote onto a table. Too easy! Scraping a key on a door. Not bad? Dropping an apple into a glass (Not great because the sound was just a glass thud!). Finally, I tried rolling the apple into the glass, across the table, into the glass and got a great noise – the sound of the apple hitting the table, rolling and then hitting the glass. Sounded a bit like someone potting a snooker ball or something like that. Hard enough that it wouldn’t be guessed for a while but easy enough that someone can guess in a few words.

Click here to see a failed attempt

Click here to see the Nova Noise itself

When we discussed the new ‘Noise’ in the station the next day, we decided on three possible answers that we would accept, I issued an internal ‘memo’ to a select number of staff that gave strict guidelines as to what was an acceptable as a guess, what was not acceptable as a guess and what a winning guess needed to include to win.

The golden rule of the NOVA Noise is that he has to be “something doing something to something”. There must be three elements. But each element must be simple in itself. In this case, the three elements that had to be part of the winning guess were namely:

the apple (the colour was not stipulated)

a drinking glass (the type was not stipulated)

the action of it impacting the glass or leading up to it impacting the glass

If any caller had guessed any of these three possible guesses during the course of the Nova NOISE promotion, they would have won the money. That’s the way it works. Everyone had a fair chance to win. Many people were close, some very close in fact (and it’s really hard for the presenters to say ‘No’ to these people but they have to follow the guidelines, as much as they feel empathy for people who are close).

We said that it was a simple noise but we never claimed it was going to be easy to guess! That’s the way the NOVA Noise works. No caller on air at Radio Nova gave the guess Katie gave before Tuesday 29th September and her guess fit was the first that fit within the guidelines that were set when the competition began and that is why she was deemed the winner.

    So in summary

It was an everyday noise and possible to guess. I got an apple, a glass and rolled it on my table

The noise was definitely real as I recorded it myself

The apple IS rolling into the glass in that it is rolling ‘into’ the glass, in the same way as you would walk ‘into’ a wall, or bump ‘into’ something. (We would also have accepted ‘an apple impacting a glass’ by the way

We had agreed to accept ‘pint glass’ as a winning guess and anyone who guessed it would have won it, same as Katie

We decided not to insist on a ‘glass’ table being mentioned as that would have made it too complicated, much the same as if we had insisted on it being a ‘red apple’.

Oh! And I don’t believe Keith Barry guessed it to be honest. There’s no way he could have known either the NOISE or the winner in advance. No way! Very clever trick (however he did it) – and you could hear how flummoxed Dee & Marty were when Dee read out the note live on-air. Made for great radio but no way! The only people who knew the Noise were me, Dee, Marty, Greg, Pat, Ernie and our producer Clint. None of the staff knew it outside the chosen few. Even Marty only found out in the last few days. People predicting the future? Tell me next week’s Lotto numbers Keith and I might believe you then…!

I’d like to thank everyone who took part for having such a laugh with us and making it such a fun game to play. We had more calls and people taking part in the NOVA Noise than we could ever had dreamed of so thank you all so much. And thank you for sticking with NOVA over the last five years and coming on the journey with us.

Your chance to win MORE big cash again won’t be far away on Radio Nova so stay tuned

If anyone would like to contact me directly about the NOVA Noise, I will be very happy to reply. My email address is kevin at nova.ie

I really do not agree . Wild accusations thrown about and the CEO responds. What do you expect ? He's to be applauded for directly responding to this nonsense .

If he'd put as much effort into his programming and content as he did into making a nova noise we might have a better station....how about some variation rolling into my eardrums Kev.....

that's a different issue Max - this thread was about accusations of a fix to a competition and its turned it into why you don't like Nova

    If I find a station I don't like , I switch it off - honestly

Wasn't there some unfavorable comment about Nova's Secret Santa last year?

    Ah yes!

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=93514695

It seems Nova spend more time than they should explaining why their promotions turn out as they do and not adding many listeners.

Maybe spend more time and effort on the playlist and that bring better results.

Fair comment...i forgot about the issue in hand, maybe its because everything they do seems to annoy me..:o.....anyways, yes it was clearly a fix and i'm sure the girl that won has received her cheque for the €5000 prize....;)

Its hard to take any of your posts too serious when all of them have defended either Nova or The Rock.

Fix is maybe the wrong word, but it certainly wasn't an honest competition. The amount of clues they gave out and the amount of wrong guesses shows that it was flawed. People were just putting words together and hoping for the best;. There may as well have been no sound at all, just ask people to describe a noise and see if it matches what the producers had.

There were people on their Facebook saying they guessed that it was "an apple being dropped into a glass" and they didnt get the prize. Considering the "correct" answer was "an apple rolling into a glass" seems a bit pedantic to say the least.

Wasnt it over €8,000 she won?

Still no exposure on this in the media or an investigation by the BAI? I find that very surprising.

    Investigate what exactly?

The rules of the competing were laid put in that response. No one has any proof there's any wrongdoing.

    Just flimsy assumptions.

That's not what the sound was. The noise had 2 distinct sounds, the drop onto the table and the bump into the glass.
Just dropping into the glass is only half right.

and on that note I think we will close this thread. No evidence to suggest it was fixed. That's up to other organisations/structures to sort. As far as I'm concerned this topic is finished and is not to be discussed. This kangaroo court session. Is over.
