New job blunder

Hey guys totally new to boards. Just wondering what you guys think. I started a new job at the weekend and I'm totally pissed off with myself. I know in any new job the first few days can be awkward getting to know folk and trying to make a good impression. My first day on the job was going really well and I was being introduced to lots of new people. While on break I was caught a bit off guard by another member of staff who had come over to introduce himself to me and at the time both my hands were full. Being my awkward self I ended up shaking the guys hand with my baby finger to which he replied nice handshake! We laughed it off but my god I hope it didn't make me look rude. I tend to over analyze everything so maybe I'm looking into it too much. The guy only works part time and I havn't seen him since. Just hope my blunder didn't leave a bad impression...

I don't see how anyone would think it was rude? If your hands were full I'm assuming that he could see you couldn't give a proper handshake so understood the situation.

Not at all, your hands were full so at least you made an effort.
Always look at these events from the other persons point of view, he could be thinking you think he's an idiot for trying to shake the hand of someone who has both their hands full!!
He might have walked away thinking "Why did I say nice handshake, that was stupid". And he'd be right to think less of himself.

    I agree,

You have had too much time to analyse, you bth laughed it off,

If that's the only thing you do wrong, you are doing well,it's not a social gaffe any more,

Good luck in the new job, try to enjoy,

Now you and your new colleague have a special handshake!

Wait until you make an arse of yourself on the first work night out and then you won't be long forgetting this situation

Just hope my blunder didn't leave a bad impression...

That's absolutely nothing... anyone who tries shaking your hand while you're carrying stuff is equally at fault.

Wait until you give a girl in work a packet of cream filled chocolate willies for Kris Kindle and she calls you up in front of 200 people to return them at the Christmas party, or you casually and jokingly imply that your CEO is a tapeworm to his face... just pulling those examples from the air :o

An awkward handshake is nothing, don't beat yourself up over trivial social encounters where more senior people should be putting you at ease more than you should be trying to impress them.

I once walked the wrong way out of a turnstiles after an interview with the interviewer looking at me (got stuck). Still got the job!

So yeah, I really wouldn't worry about a handshake.

Just be Thankful he didn't shake anything else belonged to you.......then you'd be the one with the bad impression of him and also a sexual harrassment case.

Plus he's a part timer they're always inferior in every workplace, he should be grateful you even bothered to acknowledge him, he being a part timer pleb!

Or finding out your mad one night stand was with the Boss's daughter or something like that.
OP the handshake was grand don't worry about it.

No big deal. Unless your man was from the Inner Mongolian Fu-Quen-el tribe. In which case you've just agreed to marry his daughter. Mazel tov!

You should have dropped everything you had on the floor and given him a big hearty handshake, while gesturing at all the stuff tossed everywhere saying "who cares about the stock, I'm not the one paying for it LOL"
