Jury Service

I've been called for Jury Service. My employer has been reluctant to allow me the leave and asked I write a letter looking to be excused from my duty.

I've just had a discussion and they have agreed to release me, but am expecting that I work outside normal office hours after the Jury Service in order to perform my duties.

My question is are they allowed do this?

If you are in employment, the Juries Act 1976 (Section 29) places a duty on your employer to allow you attend for jury service. It is further specified in the law that time spent on jury service is to be treated as if the employee were actually employed.

No they are not allowed to do this.

Yeah I read that, and they are allowing me as they are obliged to. My question is more around them insisting I work outside of office hours. My contract has a bit of a grey area in that it lists my working hours as 9 - 5.30 Mon - Fri, but additional hours maybe necessary in order to perform my duties. My take on that is that if I'm in the office and there's a deadline I stay late to get the work done which I have no problem with and have done in the past, but Jury duty is a completely different kettle of fish and that I can't be expected to do a full days work after it (unless I am compensated accordingly)

Are you been asked to go to jury service in the day and then when you finish for the day in court, to follow this with 8 hours work for your employer?

Can you really perform jury duty service under these conditions?
Should you mind not be totally on the case you are judging?
Can you concentrate fully and focus on the case while also thinking about work you need to complete later?

Is this fair on both the accused and victims that you will be passing judgment on and possible having a huge affect on their lives?

This is directed more on your employer than you by the way who are asking (Forcing) you to do this.

I was on jury service years ago, and one of the jurors employer refused to pay her for her time on jury service. We mentioned it to the Judges clerk, and a quick call to the employer from the court service quickly sorted that out.

Maybe mention it to the judge's clerk, and see what he / she says.
