Astra estate vs i40 estate?

We have whittled our choices down to the above two, both 2012, both have very similar mileage (65k ish which I think is a bit high for a 3 year old car), Astra is a 1.3 diesel at 12,950 and the i40 is a 1.7 diesel with all the bells and whistles (like sitting in a spaceship I would imagine) at 16950, himself says the i40 is the better bet but I think that's because it's the car he's always fancied and we didn't think we'd get one in our budget (it's actually a bit over our budget), I'm trying to be the sensible one and not be seduced by the i40, the Astra is also very nice and it's only us two and the two dogs (hence the estate!) so we don't need the extra room in the i40....aaahhh just can't decide!! Any advice?

    They're in different segments.
The Astra competes with the i30 and the i40 competes with the insignia.
I don't know how you've come to that shortlist given how different they are and the difference in price.
The Astra is a dead duck with that engine, they're a very heavy car.

If you're trying to keep costs down You could look at a Kia ceed / Hyundai i30 estate with the 1.6 CRDI engine. They would be nippier than the Astra, and cheaper than the i40.
