Holiday bike hire costs

How is it that you can hire a car for as little as €25 per day but a bike, with a value less than half costs double that?

I know it's good to be able to just turn up and ride away, but one I know of charges €364 for 7 days for a bike with a rrp of €4k — which they most likely buy at trade price of 50% less.

At these fees paying an airline €100 for a bike seems the better option and your position is dialled in from day one of your holiday.

    Is €364 too much?

Much easier for a bike to be stolen/damaged/etc so the risk is higher. Reflected in the prices.

I hired a Specialized Tarmac for €20 per day in Lanzarote, included setting the bike up according to my fit record that I emailed to them and also, even though they gave me spare tubes and CO2, they said they would come pick me up anywhere on the island if I had a puncture.

I hired a bike for two days in Marin County close to San Francisco for two days and again had it set up according to my fit specifications and it was $100 and the bike was a Seven Elium Titanium/Carbon frame (about €4k as well). So it depends on where you are.

I hired 3 bikes in the States over the summer.

First in San Fran. Basic 10 speed Specialized Roubaix. €70
A brnad new Trek 5.9 with 11 speed ultegra. €70 for a day in Santa Cruz.(great bike and great rides but I got lost and only got to see a fraction).
In Lake Tahoe I got a piece of **** Specialized Roubaix for €85 a day.

As with car hire and ski hire, the renter of a bike is on the hook for any damage or if it's stolen. So I don't see that as pricing factor. The other posters probably summed it up better by saying it depends where you are. If they can charge a high fee, many if not all will!

I'd always bring my own, not really all that expensive. The biggest cost is a good bike box, but you can hire those. I hired a bike in Hong Kong a couple of years ago and after a really bad crash on a Piece of sh*te bike, and a fairly hefty hospital bill plus paying for damage to the bike, im always a bit hesitant about rentals.

Sounds like you may have used Revolution Bike Rentals (http://revolutionlanzarote.com/the-open-road/road-bikes/)? I normally bring my bike on most trips, but with a little nipper to consider these days, space was at a premium so rented for the first time on a recent trip to Lanzarote. Revolution were really excellent, dropped/collected bike at my door, setup the position etc. and then took 10mins to draw out routes on a map that would work within the max. 2hr windows I had available. 90eur for 4 days for a Specialized Tarmac with saddle bag/pump etc. Where there's big climbs to target, I'll still bring my own bike, but where's it's just going for a few training rides, will defo consider rentals in the future. For reference, think in the Dolomites and Alps it's more like 40-50euro per day.
