If you want to buy Focus bike, don't buy one in Ireland, unless you want to get ridden on the price of course.
    Import from Germany.

Yeah, that VAT difference and import costs is something bike shops just love to jack up alright.

No import costs,60 Euro to ship and a cheaper VAT rate, you would have to be a complete mug to buy a Focus bike in Ireland.

OK, fair point and the wrong choice of words.

But I have imported two Focus bikes over the last few years, and have saved thousands of euros on them, as opposed to buying from an Irish dealer.

If the Irish dealers were more competitive, I would buy from them, but IMO they just take the píss

You've obviously done your homework but it is not fair to any bike dealer or agent to suggest that they are ripping anyone off.

You have bought 2 bikes from Focus and saved (by implication) >2k on importing them? That is exceptional value and savings in anyone's book. Were the bikes you bought in a Sale or reduced to clear?

I would second the notion that Irish shops are not competitive on price. This is mainly due to to the bike to work , which as a result ensured there has been a bike sales boom ( and we know that pricing is always high in a boom). In many cases, the shops don't even have the bike, and just order it in when its sold. With no money tied up in stock and thus no risk, there is no need to be charging the RRP—but they do!

Any decent search online will secure savings of up to 1k (and in one case more than that) on a Focus from Germany. I have benefited with a saving of €1,200 incl delivery! Meanwhile the notion of a 'sale' to a bike shop in Ireland is 10 or 20% off a bike from 2 seasons ago, and maybe the bike will have different brake calipers, wheels or chainset to offset the reduction. In Germany, you can get up to 50% on end of season stock as per the standard spec.

Eurocycles used to up to about a year ago, I think. I haven't been in since, so am not sure if they still do.

While I'd phrase it differently to the poster above, you will most likely get better value online.

The bike shop in Carrickmacross do them. A bloke in our club got a lovely one of them earlier this year.

Picked up an izalco max 1.0 earlier this year from Waterford Cycle Center. Your experience may vary but I did as well or better than I could do anywhere on line including all of the german sites.

I usually do buy online.. but I get Cervelo and focus bikes locally. Look after your local ship and they will look after you, especially on the top end stuff I find. Things like groupset and wheels they find it harder with due to having to go through pricey uk distributors.

    +1

The only reason for a sale is to get rid of stock. Most Irish bike shops are pretty small operations and can't afford to finance a warehouse full of stock. They'll only have one of each model on display, and order from the distributor/manufacturer as needed. The German bike hyper-markets you're talking about are at the other extreme, and they *do* end up with stock they have to shift, leading to the hefty discounts.

Picked up my new Focus Mares AX Cross bike from the guys at Expert Cycles Rathfarnham.

They had my size frame ordered in quickly, recieved a call to say it was in now in store, so I called in and they had the tyres "tubelesized" the brakes swapped around to the correct sides, from the European way. And the saddle adjusted to my height, and include a sneaky discount too! :)

It's been blasted around St. Anne's, Bull Island, Phoenix park, did the B race in Grangecastle and then handed it to a mate who did the A race right after, the bike hasn't skipped a beat since I got it...
