Car insurance for recent VRT car

My girlfriend has just moved to Kildare from Derry, she has recently done VRT on her car, however she might have done this 1 month to early and we are encountering some problems regarding car insurance down her and her No Claims Bonus

basically her insurance in Northern Ireland was due to finish on October 29th, when she she completed her VRT she called her insurer up North to cancel and was told if she cancels now she loses her no claims bonus for the year, its so annoying because she is one month away, so she decided not to cancel. The difference in this full years NCB for new insurance is €400

So as the VRT is already done she can't legally drive so the car is just sitting idle.

Her renewal letter from her Northern Ireland insurer should arrive in the next few days and should include her NCB's

So my questions is, if her NCB arrives from her Northern Ireland insurer arrives in the next few days in her renewal letter, can she buy new insurance down here with it and start insurance ASAP?

Some stumbling blocks would be, she is still technically insured in Northern Ireland until October 29th so I assume she can't be insured on the same car although under different plates?

Is her only option waiting until October 29th to start insurance down here?

Hope this long winded message makes sense, any help is greatly appreciated

I'd say most insurance companies will not want to insure it prior to the existing policy expiring as their is another party with an insurable interest in it. You can kind of see their point. If you have two policies on the car at the same time and there is a claim made, who pays up?

That's what I have been telling her

She thinks if she gets insurance down here before October 29th she will have Irish plates on her car so any claim would be under Irish insurance

I've had manys an hour explaining to her she needs to wait but I'm just seeking advise from others who might know an other option

Aa she will be in kildare for under 30days during her current insurance, can she not just inform current insurer of plate change and keep insurance at current address in Ni (assuming its an address she still has access to)

Other option is to use a broker and they'll sort it out.

What could a broker do any differently? I assume they wouldn't let her start a new policy before October 29th?

The only way she can drive now is to cancel the NI policy and take the hit for the years NCD. If she takes out a policy down here without cancelling the NI policy she'll have to lie about her NCD and the letter from the NI insurance company with her NCD won't correspond with what she said when taking out the policy, you usually only get 2 weeks to post in documents and she won't get the NI one in time.

Its either pay the €400 now or wait till October the 29th.

Looks like it will be the bus for her over the next few weeks

    Thanks for your comments guys

Brokers can talk to the right person who can give leeway.

Talking to a call centre won't get that leeway.

    No harm in trying.
