Does anyone know if maps work anywhere in the world without data connection ?

I always presumed you needed a connection but maybe it realies on gprs similar to sat navs which don't have sim cards and connections.

It'll show you your location and you'll be able to see the maps but you won't be able to search/use navigation.

OSMAND+ is a very comprehensive offline map application for Android, if you need a Google Maps alternative for offline use.

I've found HERE maps to be the best offline maps.

Nokia Here maps allows you to download maps for offline use. I'm using it in Fuerteventura at the moment, much better than the hire car gps.

Inside Google maps, search "ok maps" and you will be able to save offline maps.

While on holidays in Marrakech this summer I had my Android on Airplane mode and managed very successfully to navagate with Google maps ie from hotel door to eg a restaurant perfectly.

I just used Here maps for a trip through Spain. and while it was great for getting me from city to city, it did an awful job when i needed to find specific locations, sending me down one way streets, pedestrian streets, tramways etc...

Thanks for the suggestion for here maps. It worked today when i tried today in town when i put my phone on airplane mode.

I'm not too worried about it sending me down one way streets and pedestrian streets as i intend to use it for walking and getting around and finding places.
