I just bought a Fabia Mk2 1.4 BXW. What I can't get my head around the tappet noise at idle and certain rpms. Is this the engine prone to cylinder knocking? It's a nice, clean, low mileage car that's why it's breaking my heart. I cannot make the noise unheard anymore. My 13 year old 1.0 Yaris MkI runs smoother.

The injectors are clickety but if what you're hearing is loud is may be piston slap.

Thanks for your reply crabbypaddy! It sounds like this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=amfOaGPCutg
It sounds rather a piston slap, injectors won't click this bad, I reckon.

As a former fabia 1.2 3 cylinder engine,, they're tappity anyway, noisy when pushed, maybe the 1.4 is the same?

OP did you buy it from a dealer, has it been serviced? When they start to slap loudly they also burn oil, oil might be shagged, ignore the service interval and change every 10000km. If its still slapping like crazy with fresh oil then best case scenario you put in some quality 5w40 synthetic oil which is slightly thicker when warm and it reduces the noise to tolerable levels and with regular serviceing it doesn't get much worse. Worst case scenario you can keep driving it like that for a long time until its burning too much oil and you absolutely need a new engine.

The 1.2 doesn't get piston slap like the 1.4 it just burns out exhaust valves at as little as 30k km instead.

Yes, it was bought from a dealer and allegedly fully serviced. (And it's a Skoda dealership! Should know what oil to use!) Got the car Saturday, ask an independent garage tomorrow what they think and back to the dealer for refund. I've lost all my trust in this engine.

I've brought it back to the dealer today. They reckon the hydraulic tappets are making noise. They are going to have a go at it. I'm still not convinced at all. They had had the car for 1 week before I collected it, I expected them handing it over to me in acceptable condition. I was told if I still don't like after they have tried to fix, if I got it right, we can talk about refund.
(There was a strange scene when leaving the forecourt: the salesman had driven it to the service place and came back, admitting the lifters could be the problem. He left the engine running while we talked. Then we said good by to each other, I started to walk out and he shouted after me why I leaving the car there? What?? The car has problems, how am I supposed to drive it around like that? Then again, if they want to attempt some repairs how can it be done with the car not being there? I have waited enough!) I'm sick to the teeth now with the whole lot! :-( And I live 65 kms away from this place.
