Trading in a Mazda CX-5 for newer smaller car

I'm looking to trade in a 2012 cx5 with 58k on the clock for something smaller. It's the parents car and frankly they don't need something as big and powerful. Thing is they don't want to spend any money so it will be a swap or getting a car plus money.

Went to a few garages today, ford, Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, and Mazda. Mazda was the only one to make a real offer which was a new petrol Mazda 2 gt spec with metallic paint and sat nav plus €1,500 cash. Ford mentioned a focus and Toyota mentioned the auras but like the others just took my number and said they'd ring on Monday as they wanted to find out more about the cx5 so they could make an offer.

I guess my question is what cars should I be looking at that are no more than a year old with a max price of €22,500?

Any comments would be much appreciated, cheers.

personally i would stay with mazda. only had the best experiences with their cars. if the mazda 2 is, sizewise, good for your parents, i would go for it.

is the mazda 2 new or used?

It's new and was lovely to drive but a bit on the small side. Ideally they would end up with something a bit bigger. I'm thinking in a straight swap I may be able to get a low spec/demo golf or civic.

What about the CX3, that would be bigger than the Mazda 2.

It would be great but you would have to put money towards it which isn't an option unfortunately.

Any thoughts on selling privately and approaching a garage with cash?

No garage will do you a straight swap unless it against something that is very hard to sell, they are in the business of making money. Selling privately the most cost effective way but it can take alot more time and patience when you are dealing with tyre kickers and time wasters.

Ask the dealer what kind of mazda3 he can offer you.

Buzz not one garage I went to said they wouldn't be interested so I think you would be wrong. At Mazda they even offered cash as well which surprised me.

At this time of year garages sell very few new cars because of people waiting till the new year so it makes sense for the to sell a 152 if the car they are getting as a replacement can be sold for an extra grand or two.

I once traded in a 1yo car to a garage for once much older and they gave me a large cheque too, so it happens.

Got offered a 151 Golf trendline with alloys and sports pack from a vw garage with 15k on the clock if we put a grand to it. Mazda said he can do something similar on a 3 but he couldn't source one right then. He also upped the new Mazda 2 offer to add an extra €200.

The mazda guy wanted to see if he could find some 151 golf's/3's and said the offer for the mazda 2 would be there till the end of the month. That was a few weeks ago so i think I'll give him a buzz on Monday to see if he can offer anything else. Is their any cars I'm not taking into account here? Or is there a better approach to take like sell privately and go in with cash?

Sounds like the Mazda dealer may have a buyer lined up for the CX-5. I'd see what he comes back with first and then try squeezing a better deal off him.

A Mazda2 or even a Golf is a bit come down from a CX-5. Have they had a look at the Nissan Juke or Opel Mokka, they still have the high driving position of the CX-5 but are a good bit smaller size wise so may make the adjustment easier?

What about a Dacia Duster, Fiat 500X or a Peugeot 2008. All good cars and still have a high driving position like your parents CX-5 but a little bit smaller. The 500X is quite a good looking car actually.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I can't see the value holding the same on any of those. Might be in my head but I would always stay away from French/Italian cars. The father had a Alfa 156 that he loved but I don't think they would be willing in this case.

Thanks for wading in though AMKC.

Dusters are nasty, but their depreciation would be far lower than the Mazda.

The small Fiat 500 is one of the best card to hold its value, can imagine the 500x following that.
The Duster is so cheap to start with, it's depreciation is low and is demand.
Can't speak for the Peugeot but I'd say they're pretty popular used too.

Ended up doing a deal on this but instead of 152 a 161 with no sat nav and in return get €1,700. Only draw back is they have to hand the car in next week and be without the new one for another two. They have another car so are happy to do that.

After doing the numbers in my head. I reckon it's a very good deal. We may have made up to a grand extra selling privately but the hassle wasn't worth it as the car is in Donegal so would have more than likely had to take it down here with me being the one who was sorting it out.

The list price of the Mazda 2 gt with metallic and €1,700 comes to €22,500. Thats the sort of price I would have been happy with had the car been sold privately.
