Anyone know where you would pick up a good belclare ram for a reasonable price?

Maybe look on donedeal for a non registered one. Just because it's registered doesn't mean it's automatically a good ram.

    ..

I think if you are looking for a ram that will produce good quality lambs you will have to pay about €500. I bought 2 a couple of years ago and considered them a good investment. Probably will sell them this year and would hope to get €350 each

How does a registered ram work if a non registered farmer buys one? Can a registered flock only buy a regestered ram? (I know no one probably understands what im trying to say!)

Anybody can buy a registered ram. if you want to sell any offspring from the ram, ( assuming you put them with other purebred ewes) you'll sell them as unregistered, unless you join a society, use registered ewes with your registered ram and pay all the relevant fees. Registered rams cost more because the breeder has gone through the time , expense and effort making it registered.

If you want a quality ran for cheap money you'll have to be looking at old Rams. And lads don't get rid of them till their teeth or feet go so you'll have to sacrifice something

Ye may spend a bit more because next spring he'll be half your flock

I have a good one. Bought him at a soc sale as a ram lamb for 350 2 years ago but I know when I bring him to the Mart I'll. Get 125 or so for him from past experience . Nobody wants a femine looking white ram. So I'm keeping him an extra year. But it shows there are good rams at marts to be got cheap .
