Orthodontic treatment

My son (14 years old) was at the orthodontist today. He has overcrowding, an overbite and narrow jaw. Orthodontist said that even with braces (which he is on the waiting list for through school/HSE) his upper teeth will be straight but prominent. He said that jaw realignment was an option to correct this.
Initially I said no to this as it seems very severe. Has anyone had this done or have their children had it done.
I would appreciate any advise :)
    Thank you.
