VW - Turning off/down parking sensors

    Folks

I just got a 2011 VW Passatt The car has parking sensors which are quite frankly driving me mad, although they are useful in certain circumstances.

Its hard enough reversing out into traffic with my kids yelling at me, nevermind the continous beep beep of the sensors.

I would therefore would like to be able to easily turn them on or off.

The manual that came with the car states there should be a button with a "P" on it, with waves coming out of it that can be used to switch off. I cannot for the life of my find the button. There is a small button under the steering wheel area, but that only seem to activate the front and not the back sensors.

Any other Passat owners shed any light on this?

    Cheers

Are the sensors factory fitted by VW or were they installed after the car was bought from new? If they weren't installed by VW there might not be a button to turn them off but any auto-electrician would be able to wire in a switch for you in an aftermarket parking sensor kit.

Mid they're aftermarket, the beeper would usually be in the back somewhere. The handiest thing to do do make them a bit quieter is to put some electrical/insulating tape over the beeper.

    Looks like this

Just cover the hole in the middle.

Any vws I've seen with factory sensors turn the radio down at the same time. If yours doesn't do this, there's a good chance it's an aftermarket system

In BMW's you can reduce the sensor volume using the radio volume knob when they are active. Not sure if it works on VW but worth a try.

    Cheers lads

They came with the car which is second hand, so dont know whether they installed by VW

Ill give the radio buttin volume a try, I presume that only works when the radio is off

Failing that Ill live with it and get mechnic to look next time i have her in for a service.

In this image it is the button on the bottom right, if you don't have one it is aftermarket.

The factory fitted VW park assist system has a enable/disable button located next to the gear stick. It has a symbol like: P<<.

Cheers yes I see that in the book,

but my car doesnt not have that button, so i guess it is not factory fitted, unlike the software to fool the emmissions test :D:D:D:D:D

....or, don't reverse into traffic.....(not the safest anyway, as you admit...). If it's your driver, reverse IN, and drive out. Safer all round.....

If the kids are distracting you I think you should leave the reversing sensors on, or maybe even turn the volume up!

p.s. Or maybe find a way to quieten the kids.
