    Hi all,

Hope you could give me advice as a good friend of mine who is a graduated with a honours degree in Computer Eng got offered a temp job from a recruitment agency with a min wage salary with no benefits.

The recruitment agent said to him that this is what grads are getting at the moment who have no experience.

Is that really true or the recruitment agency just trying to cash on him quickly?

It's hard to believe that you spent 4 years in college trying to build better future then get a slap like that.

    Would appreciate your opinion.
    Cheers!

Not sure that's true tbh. I do know that Aldi graduates earn €68k as a starting salary which is crazy money. P&G Starting Salary is €38k for grads. I don't know anything industry specific but I'd be willing to bet that there are plenty of graduate opportunities paying above minimum wage :)

everyone has a degree. the value of it won't fully show until he gets some experience and proves himself.

tech jobs often start low paid and it can be a few years of drudgework before this improves. long term most do well but its competitive at the bottom.

stock answer to this type of question is that yr friend should definitely take all the better paid, more glamorous jobs they are being offered instead.

I was just browsing myself and most entry level some kind of support starting from 23k and above. He should be careful with recruitment agencies.

What is the job that he got offered, and what knowledge/skills does it need? If it it's just any old job, and doesn't need his degree, then possibly min-wage is appropriate. Just remember that it's a stop-gap, not a career.

How many junior-level but still degree-appropriate jobs has he applied for, and how has the process for those gone?

He mentioned that it was an It Installer something like that and that they needed a third level degree. No, he is just after college/no experience. I advised him to use all online resources and i am sure he will find something better..I hope.

Imo anyone who has got third level degree should be paid a lil bit better.

Unfortunately so many people have degrees these days that it has become worth a lot less than it used to be. It seems that only people with masters or PhD or lots of experience can start on the higher salaries, from what I have seen.

As a recent graduate, your friend should be thinking more about strategy than salary. If he doesn't have much experience, he's of limited value to employers. His degree has equipped him with a very valuable start but he needs to build a repertoire of work experience & should probably consider work now on the basis of what he can learn than what he can earn.

Thats all well and good but look at the cost of living and rent in Dublin its just not possible you need to earn to live up there.

You can live in Dublin easily on 23-25k (assuming no children etc / debt), so that point is moot.

Depending on the job, company etc, recent grads with little to no experience, should be on about 25-28k.

Maybe if you are on the outskirts of Dublin but not a hope of Living in the city centre on that kind of money . You would be left will little or noting after rent and bills etc

Lowest maybe for business grads 22-24k. Hell civil service are offering 28k for grads. He's probably got some hard skills so he could probably do better that minnium wage.

If the wage isn't worth maybe the experience might help but if the job experience that's being offered is much lower than his capabilities, I'd probably reject the offer.
