I need to get the fault code numbers from a MK4 golf. Some places have quoted me around €70 or so to do it. I just need to get the codes I dont want a full diagnostics or anything like that.

Does anyone know somewhere that would provide this a t a reasonable price please?

You can buy a code scanner yourself for as little as 15 to 20e.

I bought this simple one earlier this year and it did exactly as described:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stoga-Diagnostic-Scanner-CAN-Bus-Diagnose/dp/B005FOIC3I/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1443611779&sr=1-4&keywords=car+diagnostic+scanner

If you need it urgently, I think Maplin electronics would have similar scanners.

You can also get one of the BT ones and use your phone

Apps like Torque are great for this.

€70 for a simple plug in diagnostic lol. I bought a scan tool on amazon UK for 25 odd a year ago and its been great. Tells me what's up in 5 seconds.

But also misses all manufacturer codes and only paints you about 20% of the picture ;)

A proper scan tool costs thousands or more, hence the high price of scans.

A scan like this never happens.
    *scan finish*
    "The code is XYZ123."
    "Ok, thanks bye.."
*hands 40 euro over and drives off no questions asked*

There is always more to it.

Hopefully someone can suggest someone with an ok scanner that hopefully will give you a good code at a reasonable price.

Most of the oringinal manfufacturer DIAG heads have now been virtualised and on ebay you can pay as little as 30 quid for the cable and software - you then install the solution to your laptop and then you get the full suite of tools the garage themselves use . For me i used the BMW solution, Allowed me recode aspects of the car turn on or off features - read and get full picture of error codes - even has propmts for engineer/mechanics for steps to take in investigations with found codes.

You can then sling an aul add up on done deal and make 40-50 quid a check from it . Simply put the make and model into ebay and put diag tools after it you should find the stuff stars are made of.

I saved thousands using this suite identified oxy pre cats issues - quoted 80 notes to diag and 700 to fix - all done for 220 myself.

An interesting look into the world of scanners.
The tool Danner has is ten thousand dollars, and his company has ten of them.

May be no use to you, but if you want to travel to Wicklow i can give it a scan for you. i have an old-ish release of VAG com but should be sound for a mk4 Golf. there's surely a boardsie close to Dublin that could sort you.

I have vcds diagnostic and could scan it for you, it's a lot better than generic fault code readers....I'm in North Dublin.

That's nothing, my local Ford dealer charges 82 quid.
