Griffith's Valuation Questions

Under the column "Description of Land", are three categories - "A", "R", "P" - What do these letters signify?

Also, in the three right-most columns is an actual valuation in pounds, "s" and "d" - what do these signify?

I can see that in 1850 someone who I suspect was my great-great-great grandfather not only rented land the local gentry, but also owned a vacant and unvalued house in his own right. How typical would this have been?

Lastly, the first column "Number and letters of reference to map" provide numbers and letters, but some of these are missing from the map. For example, the table says my ancestor was associated with land marked "18 A B, and 17 B" but on the map there is only an 18A (no B) and a 17 (neither A nor B). I'm using the Ask About Ireland site.

    Any interpretations would be welcome.

    A R P = Acres Roods Perches

    £ s d = pounds shillings & (old) pence

The maps on the AskAboutIreland website date from quite a bit later than the valuation so the site references do not always match up. There are maps from the actual Valuation on FMP.ie (pay website)

edit - the vacant house may have been one that he formerly sublet - the same situation for one of my lines. Was able to confirm details using Valuation Office records.

Thanks - I joined FMP.ie and while it pulls up the record, it does not seem to have any maps. Is there a special search term for the GV map? (sorry if these are basic questions)

they are a separate collection - select Search / A-Z of record sets, and in the search type griff - you should see the survey maps and the valuation collections. Searches are by county, civil parish, townland. There are a few areas that dont have maps available
