Got job, no pay until next month

Just started a job that I'm really happy with, the only thing is that it's paid monthly and I won't have anything until next month. I've scraped together my rent but after I pay that I really have nothing until my salary comes through.

The cost of getting to work is my biggest expense but I've applied for a tax saver ticket so it's just until my salary comes in that I need to figure out something.

I'm meeting with someone from SVP later, don't know what to expect really? Any advice out there?

I can't ask any family for money because they're basically struggling too.
I moved city for work so I can't move home either.

I signed off my jobseekers and they didn't even give me my full week that I was due as my last payment, kinda feel like I'm being punished for getting a job.

Anything organisations that can help in this situation?

See what SVdP say. I'd say they'll help you out with what you need, they are very good like that. :)

It might be worth going to your bank and ask for a temporary overdraft, bring your contract as proof of repayment capacity

It could be worth your while going into your bank with your job offer letter/ contract and explaining. Often they'll give you an overdraft if you have a gaurenteed job. Don't loose the run of yourself- I don't recommend getting your full pay in advance or anything but you should pull together enough to get to work and get some groceries for the month in the likes of lidl.

Are you a member of a credit union by any chance?

Some companies can arrange a salary advance payment where they will pay you a proportion of your salary to tide you over until payday.

Maybe check with HR if they do this? It was quite common for new joiners to do this in a previous job I was in.

Hi guys thanks for replying, actually never thought of that. Didn't think banks offered that in certain cases.
Only hiccup is that I work Monday to Friday and by the time I get back into the city it's just passed 5pm so it's tricky to get to the bank.
SVP didn't call tonight either so looks like I'll have to take the money out of my rent to travel for another few days.
No, I don't have an account with a credit union unfortunately.
I must check that salary advancement thing with HR and see if it's available.
    Hopefully it's a quick month!!

Maybe HR can electronically transfer the money into your account? If they gave you a cheque, I'm not sure you'd be able to cash it on the spot any more.

Provident will give you 500 for a repayment of 650. Obviously high interest rate but just as a one time to tide you over to your first pay day it's a viable option.

Some banks will approve an overdraft over the phone, I know I had that done before in the past.

If not, is there a branch near you that you could call to at lunch? If work aren't able to sort a salary advancement thing, I'm sure they would be OK with you taking an hour or two off to go to the bank and get things sorted.

Talk to the community welfare officer in your area. They may be able to help you out until you get paid

If you are with AIB you can apply for an overdraft over the phone or online. Think its the same with BOI

Yes you can apply for an overdraft online with BOI and they give you a call back about your application but it's quicker to ring them and apply from the beginning.

Most banks let you do applications online, though without a current income to show I'm not sure how smooth the application would be.

There are a few AIBs that I know of that open on Saturdays. Maybe check online and see if there are any near you.

I do feel your pain though - employers should really have a facility for situations like this. The first month in a new job, particularly if you've had to move to work there, is extremely expensive and you're left waiting quite a while to be paid. I hope it works out for you.

So I just applied for an overdraft but was declined straight away. Direct debits are beginning to bounce so that's probably the reason. Kinda screwed so :(

    Thanks for the replies guys

Did you talk to a lender? An automated decision won't accept an application with no income, you have to talk to an actual lender

Agreed, and in terms of being screwed, there was also other options mentioned other than an overdraft that may be helpful.

Hope you work it out OP.

Hi, yeah I kinda assumed that, I asked to get off early to go to a bank but I couldn't get off early enough to make it. I'm gonna have to wait until Saturday, it's open for a couple of hours in town.

You can make appointments with most banks, ring them and see if you can would be best.

A letter from HR stating that you are currently working there (i.e. took the job/contact) might be good to get to speed up the process, good luck!!!!

I'm going to ring for an appointment tomorrow. I have emails from the company and also my id badge. Might get away with that.

Again thanks everyone for the replies, appreciate it!

So went into the bank today, they weren't prepared to offer me one. At least I know now and I've tried that avenue.
    Thanks for everyones suggestions anyways!

Hi OP. I'm in the same boat. Started work three weeks ago and was told I wouldn't be paid until the end of October. Do you have a credit card? I withdrew some money from my credit card leaving me with a bill but it should cover my commute.

Its such an unprofessional thing for a company to do , really bad form it has knocked me for six that companies feel this is acceptable behaviour.

Did you have a word with HR? I know when I started my first job there were a few of us that started at the start of the month - didn't get paid til the end. A couple of them got a partial advance of their salary from HR, just enough to tide them over until the first payday. Other than that, get back on to SVP again, and your local community welfare officer.
