Essaouira, Morocco - much to do?

    Hi,

I am planning on travelling to Morocco with my wife and our two young kids in March 2016 for close to two weeks.

I'm looking for opinions on Essaouira - in particular is there enough to it and the surrounds to avoid being bored if staying there for a week?

Our original plan was to spend most of our time in Essaouira where we have booked a self-catering apartment (then have a few days in the madness of Marrakesh at the end).

Now we're getting cold feet and worrying that the beach @ Essaouira will be too windy for the kids and there won't be enough to do nearby to keep us in happy holiday mode.

Our back-up plan is to spend 4 nights or so in Essaouira, then travel down to Agadir for 4 nights where the beach and general surroundings may be more child-friendly (if a bit more touristy and less "authentic" Morocco than Essaouira). And then still do our Marrakesh bit at the end.

Any insight from people who've been over there - either about Agadir or Essaouira - would be much appreciated!

I know the north of Morocco much better, I haven't spent much time in the central/south part, but since no one else has replied I tell you what I know.

For me you are correct in that 2 weeks in Essaouira seems way too much. 3 or 4 days there would be sufficient. What you could do is have a few days there at the start of your 2 weeks, then hire a car a travel in the interior a bit. A possible route would be Essaouira straight to Ait Ben Haddou/Ouarzazate, you'll have to drive via Marrakech but just pass through. Next go on to Merzouga for the dessert/sand dunes. You can then return via the Dades & Todra Gorges and then on to Skoura where there are many kasbahs. Finally back to Marrakech for a few days and then finish off again at Essaouira?

Outside of the big cities driving is absolutely fine in Morocco and the only big city you'll encounter on the suggested route is Marrakech. Many of the big car hire companies operate in Morocco and you'll be able to check rates on their websites.
