Looking for advice on what to use and where to get parts and supplies for servicing a YZ125?

    What oil is recommended?
    What chain lube?
    Air filter cleaner?

Good website to get all the stuff, or am I better of going to a bricks and mortar?

You have two types of oil.
Two stroke for the fuel/oil mix and gearbox oil for the bottom end of the engine.
I only buy good quality full synthetic for my bikes, Rock Oil synthesis is good but buy the premix version not the injection stuff.
Same brand Rock Oil light gear oil works well for me.
Chain lube, usually a wax type works good offroad for me, but there are umpteen different makes and styles so its hard to recommend.
    Airfilter oil and cleaner.
You can go with the solvent type which I have always used on my foam filters and wash them in kerosene.
I'd buy two filters and wash and dry one while the other is fitted.
Pour the oil into a plastic bag and squeeze the filter inside the bag so its completely covered, then hang to dry over a tray.
Once its stopped dripping put it into another bag for refitting at the next service.
I have heard the No-toil water type oils can break the foam filters down in a short time but have never used them myself so can't comment.
I use Rock Oil for the foam filter as well, its blue so easy to see where its covering.

    Thanks CJhaughey,

Yeah I'm already using Rock Oil premix synthesis 2 for my fuel/oil mix.

I'll go with the same brand for the gear oil so, How often do you change the gear oil?

I plan to buy a second air filter for rotation like you've suggested, I was told I can soak the air filter in petrol and then ring the excess out and let it dry, then when it's dry spry it with a can of specialist air filter solvent, it sound like you're using a different method? could you elaborate on this a bit please?

Where do you get your stuff? any good online sources would be ideal.

    Thanks again :D

I get mine from my LBS, but I am sure any of the online stores would sell it.
I don't use the spray oil, it might be cleaner but probably more expensive
The filter oil comes in a 1 litre bottle, I use a very heavy plastic bag and put the cleaned and dry filter in the bottom of the bag and add probably 50-100ml of oil to the filter, I then knead the filter and make sure all the oil is absorbed by the filter, its easy to see if the filter needs a little more oil as the twin air ones are orange and the oil is blue.
If its blotchy add a little more oil and squeeze it some more.
Let it dry on the filter cage over a tray so an drippage is caught.
The carrier solvent should evaporate and leave behind the sticky oil.
Kerosene is a good solvent to wash the filter in or you could buy the specialist filter cleaner in a 4l container.

I would change gear oil at least every 2-3 rides, most gearboxes only hold 500ml or so so its not expensive to do and keeps everything fresh.
On a 125 you'll be working the clutch a lot and the oil gets dirty quicker than on say a 250 where you don't need to slip it as much.

  • Cool, sounds good, thanks man ;)

  • So I did some digging around on the interwebz and stumbled upon ALLMOTO

Seems like a very decent parts site, the website is laid out quite well and easy to navigate.

The guy running it emailed me back after 5 minutes of emailing him on a Sunday night, the prices seem competitive compered with similar products available on ebay, I don't really have anything other than ebay to compare the prices with.

I heard CCM where meant to be competitively priced, but their site has no browsing or purchasing functionality and they have not replied to an email I sent them, so don't really know how they stack up against ALLMOTO.

Anybody have experience with either of these two sites?
