i am in the mind boggling process of buying a different car when i was not ready to change...

I have been forced into this situation after my car was written off.

i was driving 1.8t golf and it was great. the insurance are only paying a very small amount and i don't have much to add to it.

so the questions is a 2lt + petrol or 2lt diesel.

i do about 200kms a week not including weekends for personal trips etc etc.

i have about e3000 to spend.

    max tax would be 2.5

so really what options do i have , bear in mind i like driving, really like it.

Petrol may be best suited as you arent doing massive mileage to justify for a diesel IMO.

Lets say if you are doing 200kms every week of the year, then you are only clocking up little over 10,000kms a year.

that's what i was thinking, so what kind of milage justifies a diesel. ?

i had a rental car a 1.2 tdi Ibiza.. never ever want one !!

but i got 1000kms from 55 euro

Some say diesel starts to make sense once you are doing over 20,000 km

that's crazy, a lot of mis informed people in Dublin so !!!

so for a petrol i was thinking a 325ci coupe
    or a 2.0t saab

not mine, just think it's a nice example for the money. facelift, nice colour, leather, climate control etc, decent bit of test and tax too.

if you liked the Golf, what about the likes of an Audi TT, or another Golf :P

i have had 5 golfs in a row, its the easy way out now.

no chance on a TT....great engine but i don't like the old TT shape..

can you remap a leaf? i was told to get a Twizy by a guy who owns several Ferrari an r8 and other crazy stuff, he said it was the best fun car he owns.

but anyway back to the real world.

    i was thinking this:

ok, so your budget isnt getting you into a diesel for the lower tax, Id get a petrol, maybe honda accord? I just took a look out of curiosity to see what was out there at the moment, the below looks beautiful, great spec...

what are accords like as a drivers car?

    looks like a serious spec.

ok I havent driven one, but often when people are asking about buying and say they are looking at bmw and audi, one or two of the knowledgeable posters here, really sing the accords praise. There is a fairly major jump in tax from 2L to 2.2L. At least with the 2L tax, most can afford to pay it in one go, go after that and often people end up doing it by the quarter, which costs more money again...

Honda are a very nice drivers car and the model posted much better to its older sibling.
They are extremely reliable and will most likely never let you down.

Go for that or a legacy or a vrs Octavia something like that.

Accords are a great car to drive, they feel solid and sturdy on the road and handle well. Plenty iof comfort in the cabins as well.

Reliability wise there hard to beat.

I owned one for 3 to 4 years and loved it.

Great looking car to imo and a car that is aging well.

Yes. You can go buy it now as anything else will be worse :D

Great looking, great handling car with a good sounding 6 cylinder. You obviously want something semi-sporty and if you can stomach the tax on a 2.5 then thats defo the best choice

I drove an Accord for years and loved it. Super reliable and great handling. But the tax for that engine size will be a killer, over 900 per year.

The Accord was sadly sold a while ago, then I got a smaller petrol car, and now I drive a Fiesta diesel. It is incredibly economical. I filled it once in the past two weeks, and still have not used up all the fuel. For comparison, my 1.4 petrol car was being filled once a week for the same mileage. I only do about 12,000km a year, so not huge mileage but I am saving about 30 euro a week on current prices.

So you have a saving of at least 30 euro a week on fuel (1500 a year) plus a saving of 700 on tax if you go for a newer diesel. That's 2200 a year at least. If you can stretch to a newer diesel, then you will recoup the additional cost in a year or so.

H have an 03 325ci m sport. Great car. Exact same mileage as the one you posted op, only thing that has failed in nearly 4 years of ownership is starter motor. Have it checked by a BMW specialist if buying it...
