    Hi all,

I'm currently in desktop support and am looking for a change. I'd like to gain a general server qualification that could benefit me in seeking employment in future. Can anyone recommend which qualification is good to have and employers are looking for please? I've no idea where I should start. If I was to go for something like a Windows server 2012 how much would it cost if I was paying for the course/exam myself?

    Cheers :)

This is your base certification for Windows Server 2012. 3 exams, each covering a different topic.

You don't have to do the training courses. Are they beneficial? Yeah. Would I pay for them myself? Hell no. I've been on these courses numerous times. They're five day courses that you could easily do in half the time. Fine if an employer is paying for them, but I would feel cheated to drop €1,500 on a course and be spending most of the time twiddling my thumbs.

Instead you can buy a book for each exam. They're big books, take a bit of reading but usually come with all the practice material to let you work on it in your own time. And the exams then are €150 each. For each exam, between book and test you can expect to spend €200. Which isn't really very much.

For someone who's already in server admin, these are a bit of a pain, formalities to spruce up the CV. For someone in desktop support, you'll actually find these really educational and useful. But you need to put the knowledge to practice. If you do the exams, but don't get near a server for two years, you'll have forgotten 75% of the exam.

First thing I would do is ask your boss if they can do anything for you. Many employers will stump up the cost of exams (and even training). If they know you're interested and put the money into you, then they'll probably be willing to move you into more advanced roles internally.
