Twitter account using my email address

I found there's a Twitter account with my email address.
I don't remember ever creating an account, and searched my mailbox for any "welcome to twitter" sort of messages but didn't find any.

I was able to request a password reset on this account and can login to it now.
    The username is in arabic.

There are no tweets and not following anything.

What do you make of it?

I was thinking maybe my email was hacked but I don't think so.
I can login I can reset the password.

It's entirely possible I actually did create a twitter account once.
    But not with that username.

If someone hacked it, why didn't they change the email address?

What's the exact name on the account? Have you googled it?

I have a few emails in my inbox telling me to confirm my Twitter account. The name was in Chinese or something, that doesn't mean someone hacked my email address. It means someone entered my email address as their email address when creating their Twitter account.

Or the more likely reason, as my email address is hard to guess, is that a bot did it.

How generic is your email? (first.lastname@gmail.com?)

Pretty sure up until a couple of years ago, you could make a Twitter account without having to verify the email address, so could just be a spam bot creating Twitter accounts under common emails.

My email address is hard to guess. What I believe happened was, I registered an account on a website and that website was dodgy and gave my email address to a spam bot.

In the "Confirm your Twitter account" email there's a link you can click if you didn't set up the account and Twitter will forget your email address. But if this happens again I'm going to demand that Twitter bans my email address from being used by anyone to create an account, I will never join Twitter.

Possibly someone created an account and got the mail wrong and never used it.
