I have been thinking of investing in shares using an online platform such as Davy Select. I do not want to risk too much at first. How much would one reasonably need to invest to hold a portfolio with around 10 stocks and for it to be worth while (i.e. how much to justify transaction costs)?

Use a different platform such as TD Direct or Degiro and you'll worry a lot less about transaction costs.
