Lets hope your not in a hurry wherever you are going as they are chronic slow, especially compared to your old diesel A3. They burn oil too as they get older and the gearboxes are a bit on the soft side. A petrol Golf in that price range can be a gamble and a dealer selling a car of this value is not going to stand over it much in the way of warranty.

A Corolla or Focus would be a safer bet imo.

They have a soft engine op. They burn a lot of oil and the engine is also underpowered. Something like a corolla would be a much better car.

I drove a 1.4 petrol Golf this evening and I thought it was nice to drive BUT I wouldnt sell my Corolla for one, no matter how much I would love a Golf.

I was talking to 3 people during the week who all have the 1.4 petrol Golfs and they all have problems with them and they are all trying to sell them. Ive my Corolla for less than 3 months, have over 5,000mls clocked up and have done various driving and dont have one bad word to say about it!

Had a 1.4 petrol Golf for about 8yrs, and not much bother with it, despite them getting terrible reports.

Only thing, its a heavy car for such a small engine, and it wouldn't pull you out of bed.

Have a look out for a civic, hatchback or saloon in 1.4 from 99 onwards. They are absolutley bullet proof. I had one for about 8 years, it had 220miles when i sold it on and outside of servicing, i spent very little on it.
A good 99/00 saloon with 100k miles will be about €900-€1100. Great cars.
Dont buy a gold one tho, everyone i ever saw suffered badly from lacquer peel, including my own one.

    Edit.
Looks like their cheaper in Kerry,

i had one for 9.5 years and loved the car , had little or no bother with it. I would still be driving it bar the fact it was rearended.

Still have one from new. mk5 1.4 75hp, 11 years old with 175k miles. Never a problem with the engine. Changed the clutch and gearbox in the last year, but sure that would be normal on any car with those miles. But and here is the BUT, I have always changed the oil to the schedule of 10k miles and use vw spec castrol edge 5w/30. So from the posts we can gather that they are a good engine if the serviced to schedule with the correct oil, but stray away from that and they are not forgiving. Now must turn my attention to a new timing belt shortly.

The mk5 golf is a nice car, engine is fine for my use, but I can see how it is not powerful enough in other situations. I have driven corolla's or the same vintage and they are also a nice car and the engine has more power and flexible and also seem to be more forgiving to different grade oils being used as is usually the case with indy's in Ireland.

If I got a second hand 1.4 golf with full service history at the right price then I'd go for it, but those will be few and far between here.If I was buying second hand without a service history, then it would be the corolla that I'd go for. The corolla engine is much sweeter.

Even properly maintained examples burn a lot of oil. You have been very lucky with yours. In general they are a poor engine. They are way behind other engines of the time in terms of reliability, performance, refinement and how quiet they are.

Yeah agree with that.I'm just making the point that they aren't all bad. Mine does burn some oil btw, usually 1-2L between services. I'd imagine cars that don't are few and far between,

What reliability problems are they meant to have ?
In 120k miles mine never failed to start or get home even when the clutch went
