Buying a new car

I'm strongly thinking of buying a 161 which would be my first brand new car. I was just wondering from those with more experience than me what exactly is negotiable? What sort of discount could I expect if any on the list price? How much less than the going private sale rate might I expect to get on a trade in etc. The car I'm looking at is about 42k and my current car is worth about 6-7k I reckon. Also are financing rates negotiable or set in stone?

Theres no definite way of getting the best deal but a few things that will help. Firstly you need to weigh up to see are you better of selling your car privately and then buying new car straight almost always you are but its more hardship and if your current car is not popular it's easier to just trade it in.

Next point you can get discount of retail price if buying straight (not trading in your car) if trading you pay the retail so that way the dealer has a few bob to play with and bump up your old cars trade in value.

Ultimately the best way of getting the best deal is to go to at least 4 main dealers and price like with like same car colour spec and see who's giving the best deal you will often see reasonable price difference in cost of change as some dealers are more stuck than others to sell. Ideally you need to go to each dealer in person and give the impression that you want to do a deal but at the same time have no problem going elsewhere to get a better deal.

    Hope this helps.
