Me and the brother are planning a cycle in the west next week while the weather is still good.

We've thinking of going from Westport to Galway via clifden over 2-3 days. Both of us cycle regularly for work but not club/sportif level

Do people have any route recommendations, things to see, roads to avoid etc. it'll be the first time in the part of the country in years for both of us.

    Cheers

    Barry

I'm not a cyclist but just wanted to let you know that there is lots of info about that route on the Wild Atlantic Way website. Can't do links sorry but I'm sure Google will have it. Have a great trip.

Id go out by the coast to Casla
Up to Maam Cross straight through the gap in the mountains to Leenane
From Leenane you can go the slightly longer way past Doolough and Delphi or straight to Westport
It's a bit of a detour to get to Clifden, as you have to come back to Leenane to cross Killary Harbour

You say you're starting in Westport so I would head for Louisburgh. Turn left for Leenane and through some stunning scenery by Doolough and Delphi. Stop in one of the pubs in Leenane. Don't worry about it after that, you won't want to leave... But when you do head towards Letterfrack and Clifden and Maam X and generally find your way...

As Felloffmebike says, turn off to the right for Louisburgh after leaving Westport on the N59 and head for Leenane, great cycle, have done it very often. After Leenane, on N59 head for Clifden via Kylemore, Letterfrack, take a turn to the right for Cleggan and from there onto Clifden. Again, this is a great cycle. I have done it very often and is a favourite of mine. From Clifden, head south towards Ballyconneelly, Roundstone, Cashel. At Cashel X, take a right turn and follow the route for Carna, Kilkieran, Rosmuc, Screebe, Camus and follow the coast road to Galway. Alternatively, after Cashel X, take a left turn which brings you across via a link road to Rosmuc, a shorter trip, bypassing Carna and Kilikieran, if that route is followed. The route via Carna and Kilkieran is particularly nice and if you have time on your hands, follow that one. Enjoy, hopefully, I will be out cycling parts of these routes through next week and might meet you somewhere along the way.

I did this https://www.strava.com/activities/13189015 a few years ago while the rest of the family drove. Stopped for a lovely lunch in a pub in Leenane. Would recommend the diversion up the Sheefry climb too.

Continued to Galway a few days later, but did the direct route through Maam's Cross and Oughterard - if you've time, I'd definitely go round to Roundstone which is lovely. And if you've more time, go round the coast via Spiddal to Galway.

Thanks everyone. We're thinking to go from Castlebar via Loiusborough and Leenane to Clifden. From Clifden via Roundstone to Carraroe on Day 2. Final day from Carroroe to Galway.

    Hope the weather stays good!

If you're looking to stay somewhere in Clifden, I cannot recommend the Inn To The West enough. The breakfast is a definite must!

    Enjoy the cycle. :-)
