Currently looking at aa bungalow that has made an attempt at converting an attic for habitation but doesn't satisfy fire regulations. Attic has been flooring, toilet, velux windows and spiral staircase. Trying to decide whether to leave as is 'non habitable space' and build on 30 sq m extension instead. What would anyone recommend to do? Comes down to cost.

Regardless of whether you build an extension or not; I think it would be worth your while (and peace of mind) bringing the attic conversion up to fire regs.. Sounds like most of the heavy lifting is done anyway in terms of a conversion.

You and I (and everyone else) knows well that you plan on using it as habitable space.

It's ultimately you and your family's safety that matters

If you're planning on using it as a bedroom, then I'd definitely bring it up to regs. If you're planning on using it as an office or TV room, then I'd do the extension first and come back to the attic later.

unlikely that could be considered non habitable.
