    Hi all,

This morning on sir John rogerson's quay there is a foreign naval ship docked. It appears to have a very large gawge in the side of it. Anyone have any ideas what happened?

Its a German Naval vessel , Gorch Fock according to the Dublin Port Companies website, its open to the public for visitors to tie in with the OTOBERFEST event in the IFSC this weekend.

Is it fresh damage or old damage, did you take a photo to get a better visual for fellow boardies to commment/offer opinion on.

Couldn't get a picture I'm afraid, it looked like fresh damage, they had a platform lowered down beside the dent(basically on the side of the ship looks like another boat/ship sailed into the side of the German Naval vessel)

Also its not the Gorch Fock, it is a modern naval vessel, the gorch fock is a sailing vessel

No the Gorch Fock was a training vessel and was open to the public for the last 2 Sundays but left port last Monday afternoon. The ship that's there now is a proper modern naval vessel, it says 'Ludwigshafen Am Rhein' on the side.

    Edit, this is the one

She does have a portion of her hull painted black/dark grey just at the waterline towards the stern which might look like damage? Lovely looking vessel.

Better picture of the vessel in the marinetraffic link above, but there are a few others in her class pictured in wikipedia for comparison...

I can't see her being docked in Dublin if she's damaged at all, I'd imagine it'd be straight back to Hamburg with her (or wherever they have repair shipyards!) for a bit of welding.

L.E. Orla rolled into Dun laoghaire yesterday afternoon with one of the lads leaning over the side painting a crossbones, must have had a cut off the German corvette. Entschuldigung.

I stand corrected, Dublin port Company need to up-date their website so :-)

According to Janes Defence weekly magazine F124, is a Corvette class ship, looks cool.

Must pop down and get some pics over the week-end to tie in with the good German beer and food at the Oktoberfest in IFSC. :-)

    I think you mean this...
Since the activities of the Corvette require an undiscovered approach, was in Braunschweig putting particular emphasis on small class signatures. To reduce the radar signature, the surfaces were, particularly, made to the boat sides at different angles. These X-shape in combination with a number of other measures to produce a significant reduction and scattering of radar echoes over the entire lateral and vertical angular range. [3] [1] Although the displacement of the K130 is almost five times greater than that of fast patrol boats Cheetah Class that is radar cross section smaller. To reduce the IR signature, seawater is injected into the horizontal run to the boat side exhaust pipes of diesel engines, which are just above the water. [14] As a result, the temperature of the exhaust gases is lowered to a previously unattainable by air cooling value. [3 ]

    Looks like this.
