Interior Double Doors

(Originally posted this on Woodcraft - but think this might be better suited. Apologies if that's a no-no - mods can feel free to delete the Woodcraft one)

I ordered some interior double doors and asked for them to be rebated.

The lad came to fit them yesterday and said the opening was 60 inches and as they'd given him two 30 inch doors they couldn't be rebated. He said the shop would need to order bigger doors (he was only doing contract work for them).

The shop called just now and said the 32" doors couldn't be rebated because they'd have to take too much off them and it would affect the structural integrity of the door. He said the best he could do was a T-bar to give a rebated effect. (Re: the structure - I tried to post a link but don't have permission - they have 3 horizontal bars and 4 panes of glass. Google "Deanta Doors HP1G")

A mate who knows a bit about this stuff said not to go with that and that, while they were right that 32" ones were too big to rebate on site, the shop should be able to order them rebated.

Anybody know if this is right?

The ope is too big for rebated doors for 2 rebated 30 inch doors the ope should be exactly 59 3/4 inches
The reason they suggest the t- bar is that a lot of the prefinished doors available now don't have a deep enough side lipping of solid timber to machine a 1/2 inch rebate. Once you go below 10-12mm your in to chipboard
I've fitted a good few with the t-bar and they look ok would still prefer rebated given the choice what size doors were in the ope orignaly

Thanks for the reply - the original doors were there when we moved in. I'm guessing 31" as they are clearly rebated.

So should it be possible to have 32" doors engineered to fit the ope at the manufacturers?

Not that I know of ,but I'm open to correction on that.
What height are the frames as 32" doors only come 80" in height whereas 24"-30" doors are 78" in height
Since the frame is 60" wide I'd get two 1/2"x 3/4" beads of similar finish to the doors and fix them on to the stile of the 30" doors to create a rebate.
If the orignal doors were painted this is probably how the rebates were achieved and with paint you'd never notice the planted beads.

Thanks for the help on this. It's much appreciated.

Spoke with the fitter on Friday afternoon and he explained the various options. Going to go with a 12mm beading on the ope side of each door to provide the small overlap necessary for the rebate.
