As per title, looking at a car when the NCT ran out in Jan 2015.

If I get an NCT, how long will it last? Til Jan or til Sept 16?

    Thanks

It would help if you gave the car's year.

They'll give you 12 months NCT and not a day more.

Assume NCT expired on 10th January 2015.

If you do your test after 11th October 2015, it will be valid until 10th January 2017.

Oct & Dec have 31 days each, so you need to wait another 2 days.

In the OP's case he would have to leave the car parked up and do the test after 27th Oct to avail of the 90 day rule and get an NCT valid until 25th Jan 2017. Pass it any earlier and the cert will expire 25th Jan 2016.

I rang the NCT center up and the fellow said that any booking before Jan 16 will result in a cert for only the length until jan 16

    That doesn't sound right.
If you pass a test within 3 months (90 days) of the car's due date you will get a cert that expires on the next due date (2017).
If you pass a test more than 3 months ahead of the car's due date you will get a cert that expires 12 months from the date of test.

    Validity of test certificate

    12. (1) Subject to paragraph (2), a test certificate ceases to be in force on that test due date which occurs after the certificate to which it relates was issued.

    (2) A test certificate which is issued not more than 90 days before a test due date continues in force until the subsequent test due date.
Your test due date is Jan 2016, the subsequent one is Jan 2017.

All right, I was wrong, but you are wrong as well.
    Not 2 days, just one.
If OP's NCT is due 10th January, he can do NCT on 12th October to fit it within 90 days of due date.

Where did you get 25th January due date? I looked up and didn't notice anything like that from OP.
But in your case, it would be on 27th October (including that day).

It's an 02 car so only gets 1year test max.
    They were right AFAIK.

Yes - one year calculated from due date (January 2016) to January 2017.
Additionally you can do test up to 90 days in advance, so in best case scenario you can get 15 months valid test. And that's exactly what OP can do.

    From the NCT website:

    https://www.ncts.ie/q3.html

"Please note that testing your vehicle within the 90 day period will not alter the date on which your vehicle falls due for the NCT each year nor will it extend the NCT certificate expiry date."

And what does it mean according to you in relation to OP's case?

    it's due since January 15

If you get it tested within 90 days of the NEXT test date (jan 2016), the cert will be valid until Jan 2017.

It's as simple as that. I have done it.

If you get it tested more than 90 days before the next test due date, it will be backedated to Jan 2015 amd thus will expire in jan 2016.

Means what it says. I can only go by experience and what it says on the NCT site and what the op has been told by the NCT centre.

Only if the OP had a valid NCT would that count, seen as the OP has an out of date NCT since Jan '15 he/she would have to test it and get a cert until Jan '16 and then get another test withing the 90 days to avail of the Jan '17 cert, its that simple.

    Completely incorrect

I said above I have done this myself, NCT was expired by 9 months, i was within 90 days of next test date so i got 90 days plus 1 year cert.

If you are within 90 days of next test date, it will be certifired forward for 1 year, regardless of whether it was previously expired or valid.

    No, that's incorrect.
Fact if OP has current NCT or not doesn't matter.
    Due date is in January.
If you do test within 90 days before that date, you will get a cert valid until due date year later.
Ex. NCT due date 10th January 2016. NCT done on 12th October 2015. Cert issued valid until 10th January 2017.
It's completely irrelevant if there is current NCT on the car or not at the moment of the test.

NCT due date falls on 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and each next anniversary of first registration.
In OP's case it's due January 2015, but it's also due January 2016.
If OP manage to test it not more than 90 days before due date in January 2016, then cert will be valid until January 2017.
Fact that NCT was not valid from January 2015 is irrelevant.

I would definitely ignore what the test centre told you in favour of whatever you read on boards

I'd ignore what the test centre told me in favour of whatever the legislation says (which is that a cert issued within 90 days before a due date is valid until the next due date)

Grand so. That's cleared it up.......

    :p

Just read that the guards are cracking down on the use of the car whilst waiting for the NCT so it looks like I won't be driving it for a couple weeks!

Fingers crossed it sails through. :)

As you say - just hold off until 27th October with your NCT.
I think if you do it on 27th it should be within 90 days, but possibly I'm wrong so just to 100% on safe side, book it for 28th October or later.
This will get you a cert valid until 25th January 2017.
And try to obstrain from driving until it's tested.

Does that mean there is no system-generated penalty for simply skipping an NCT? Seems odd that it's so loose.

Why should there be? I haven't been driving the car. Neither has the previous owner.

Don't understand why people are so quick to want onerous penalties???

What's odd is that system is based on due dates on anniversaries of first registration, which way after doing the test, it might be valid for anything between 27 and 3 months.

In most other countries, test is always valid a year or two from date you do the test.
    Makes much more sense.

I understand that current system is to encourage people to do NCT on time, as they say there is no advantage in waiting as your NCT won't be valid any longer if you wait, but that's purely childish.
If they don't want people to drive without test they should just enforce it, instead of coming up with some silly incentives like that.

And yes - answering your question - there is nothing wrong with skipping the NCT.
NCT is only needed if vehicle is driven on public road.
