Emergency tax concern

    Hi,

My last employment was in 2013. I have been in college the last two years. I have started a new job which commenced this month (September)... I understand that I will not have too pay much tax as I will have not earned 16500 before the end of the year. Does this also relate to emergency tax? Payroll are registering my payment tomorrow but i am not due to be paid to my account for another two weeks (8th of October).. I had rang the revenue to give them my employers registration number so I would avoid emergency tax. I have now found out that revenue have not forwarded on my tax details to my companies payroll yet.

    two questions...

    (1) Does me starting my first employment of the year in September exclude me from emergency tax?

    (2) I am not paid until 8th October but payroll do their payments tomoro. For me to avoid emergency tax, Is tomorrow the final day they need my tax info from revenue or would them receiving my tax info within the next two weeks before payment is released to my account be ok for me to avoid emergency tax?

    Thanks in advance

If you pay emergency tax you will get it back. I would imagine that payroll calculating tax tomorrow would mean that they will tax you based on what is on your tax cert ie no tax credits no cut off point emergency tax under the week 1 month 1 system if Revenue have not forwarded your details onto your employer

    Thanks for reply....

I understand that after I have given revenue the employers registration number then an email is sent from revenue to payroll. It is then down to the payroll to open this email and follow necessary procedure.. I had rang the revenue on Monday.. They said they would post something out to me. It has'nt arrived yet. Is there anything else that I need to do or Is it all now in revenue and payrolls hands?

    Thanks...

its all in revenues and payrolls hands. Rather than an e-mail your employer they update an online cert (called the P2C) which payroll downloads through Revenues online service (ROS) when they do the calculations

Don't be too concerned. The first few weeks of emergency tax you still get some credit and cut off point. Its only around week 8 e tax gets punitive. You've done everything correctly and any small amount taken in emergency tax will be refunded through your next wage as long as you're payroll are doing their job.
Relax and enjoy your new job

Ah ok so The letter that revenue said they would send to me is only for my record.. I was thinking that when I get this letter I then have to pass on more info to my payroll...

Maybe revenue have already updated my tax cert and my payroll have downloaded it... I presume it would have been available for download as soon as I got off the phone to revenue on Monday?

Haha yeah i should be relaxing more :) Just all panic stations atm.... I was told that emergency tax takes 52% of your first paycheck?

    Incorrect. After 8 weeks.
    Its tiered.
    1st 4 weeks you'll pay very little
2nd 4 weeks it goes up more
After this its bad. Its to ensure you notify revenue. You've done that.
This is a simple laymans explanation presuming an average wage.

Either the next day or the day after it would update.
