    Hi,

My last employment was in 2013. I have been in college the last two years. I have started a new job which commenced 4 weeks ago (1st september) I understand that I will not have too pay much tax as I will have not earned 16500 before the end of the year. Does this also relate to emergency tax? Payroll are registering my payment tomorrow but i am not due to be paid to my account for another two weeks (8th of October).. I had rang the revenue to give them my employers registration number so I would avoid emergency tax. I have now found out that revenue have not forwarded on my tax details to my companies payroll yet.

    two questions...

    (1) Does me starting my first employment of the year in September exclude me from emergency tax?

    (2) I am not paid until 8th October but payroll do their payments tomoro. For me to avoid emergency tax, Is tomorrow the final day they need my tax info from revenue or would them receiving my tax info within the next two weeks before payment is released to my account be ok for me to avoid emergency tax?

    Thanks in advance :)

You will be on emergency tax until they receive your details regardless of what month you start work.

With any employer I've had, they need the details by date they do their payments, it can't be changed after but you will get the money back in the following paycheck provided they have received your details by then.

    1) Until they have tax details it will be emergency tax I'm afraid. Doesn't matter what month it is. You will get the tax back in the next payment once they have those details though

    2) If their pay run is tomorrow you would need to have the tax info with them by then. Most salaries sections can't/won't alter payments after the pay run. It won't matter if you get the info to them before payment is actually released. Payment is pretty much set in stone after the payrun so any changes will be made in the following pay run

    Ok thanks for clarification...

I understand that after I have given revenue the employers registration number then an email is sent from revenue to payroll. It is then down to the payroll to open this email and follow necessary procedure.. I had rang the revenue on Monday.. They said they would post something out to me. It has'nt arrived yet. Is there anything else that I need to do or Is it all now in revenue and payrolls hands?

    Thanks...

Did they ask for your employers number and starting date and such over the phone? There's a high chance it is set up, you and your employer just havnt received the confirmation cert yet.

Was the form a 12a you filled in?

And lastly, if you use PAYE anytime you can check your credits and SRCOP there. If they're up and your employer is there then you should not be emergency taxed.M
Be warned you will loose credits and cut off point of you were on job seekers benefit.

Hi I didnt fill out any forms.. I did it all over the phone on Monday just gone.. I gave him my employers registration number, and also I gave him my starting date. Yeah, I havnt received any paper certs yet. He said over phone that something would be posted to me this week.. It hasnt arrived yet thats why Im thinking that it is too late now...

Ok thanks for that info I will check that now on PAYE...

I have been on job seekers allowance ( I think anyway haha) for the last two years (Back to education process)..... What does losing tax credits and cut off point mean? How will that effect me? Sorry its all double dutch to me.... Im not working in any finance job so not sure on any of this.....

High chance it's been set up, but best way is to check your PAYE anytime. Could be a payroll problem however if you go onto emergency tax and if so it should be sorted by next pay check including a tax return. (Personally I use emergency tax as a way to save for christmas!) if you are on emergency tax next pay check, request a p21 balancing statement, and give that to pay roll.

You will be ok on job seekers allowance, it's not a taxable social protection income.
Your tax credits are basically how much "tax free" money you get. Eg: the first €63 euro every week is tax free. It's limited to €3300 a year if you're a PAYE customer which you are.
Your cut off point In laymens terms is the level at which you're taxed at 20%. This point for you is €33800, so the first €33800 you earn is taxed at 20% anything over that is 40%. If you earn less than €33800 in a year you will only
    Pay 20% tax.

unfortionately PRSI (pay related social protection) and USC is charged regardless of how much you get paid. If you have a medical card let revenue know, you will only get charged for USC at no higher than 3.5% instead of 7%

No problem, I do hope it's sorted for you, it does unfortionately boil down to the employer, when you gave details the customer service rep inputted it into the system then and there (if he or she is any good ....) and then sent the cert out for payroll to apply to your wages. If you're set up with revenue it's very easy to get your tax back its automatic most times.

Don't stress too much, emergency tax for the first few weeks isn't so bad. It's about week 4-5 that it starts to hurt, and by week 9 it's really biting (40% or so).

Even if they charge you it in the first pay run, you'll get it back in the next.
