    Hello,
I'm working on a project that involves renovations of a dwelling and conversion of the attic. At first floor we have 2 bedrooms and then in the attic we are putting a new bedroom there. My architectural technician friend says that I need to make sure the stairs from ground floor to first floor is 800mm wide, but that the stairs from first floor to the converted attic can be 600mm wide since it is only serving one bedroom and a storage space. For this stairs could I use a STIRA, or do you people think a normal 600 wide stairs would be more appropriate? I know fire regs are more stringent when you have three levels.

no,a stira is a glorified ladder, is not considered 'fixed access' and is not an acceptable means of accessing or escaping from a habitable room

You state that you know fire refs are more stringent, there's your answer. Fixed stairs only but it doesn't have to be as onorous as the ground-first floor stairs. Don't forget all your other requirements with regards to loft conversions ;)
