So im taking a year out of college and desperately need something to do. All my friends are still in college but i would love to travel for the year but it doesnt appeal to me going on my own. I need to get out of Ireland though. I have been working full time since may but if i stay working full time for my year out I think i will lose it. Im already losing it at this stage lol.

Any ideas on what i could do for the year? Apologies if this is not the correct place for the thread.

Travelling on your own is grand, did it loads of times myself and got on sound. You'll always meet someone. Plenty of backpacking or cycling routes to try, or go somewhere more off the beaten track.

Or try volunteering for a few months, you can always jack it in if you don't like it.

Get your bloodwork done. Then go to the UK and eat Fish & Chips at 365 Chippers, taking photos of the establishments and all the fish & chips of course. Keep notes and musings about each place and area. Then write a book called: 365 of Days of Fish & Chips and how it made me Fat & Sick / Slim & Healthy.

    • Go fight ISIS, bring back the days of the International Brigades.
    • Dance.
    • Grow a ponytail, and act like you're complete unaware of its existence when people ask you about it.
    • Find a village where someone recently died and live their life for a year.
    • Try to write out every number.

Volunteering can be useful and worthwhile if your CV is looking bare. You might even enjoy it.

Don't fear about travel on your own. Within days you'll meet plenty of people doing exactly the same thing, so much so that it will be a battle to actually experience anything other than the same faces travelling the same well-worn round of SE Asian hostels or South American trekking routes.

What's the story with all this gay and proud year I keep hearing about?

Gap year is one of those horrible English terms like 'poorly' and 'Uni'.

Volunteer on the Donbass front against the Ukrainian separatists. You'll get Ukrainian citizenship, combat experience and the satisfaction you've helped repel the Red menace.

Failing that, become one of the pioneers of telecommunications in Central Asia.

    What's wrong with "uni"?

Some of the posters are nearly there but not quite.

You tell people you were off fighting ISIS / Nazi leprechauns / space aliens whatever.

You actually go on the piss for a year. Remember week 52 is detox and tanning salon. And download a book about whatever godforsaken country you weren't in.

Go travel Europe and Asia for a year...

    Grow white person matted dreads...

Learn to play one Ed Shereen song on a guitar...

Wear nothing but flip flops and singlelets...

Smoke weed and drink cheap booze, but never buy it yourself...

Return to Ireland a obnoxious twat, but don't ever let friends and family forget how much better than them you are now because you know what it's like out there now...
