    Hi everyone,

I always wanted to do open-wheel amateur racing, but don't know anything about the world of amateur motorsport. I am looking for some guidance and will do in in depth research on them. At the moment, I have no idea where to look what to read so I have a couple of questions that I want to ask, any answer and comment is appreciated.

1.Do I have to get some kind of a certificate to be able to compete in amateur races or tournaments?

2.Which European country is the best for amateur openwheel racing in terms of availability of races and affordability? Or is the US better?

3.What classes are there for open-wheel amateur racing, like Formula Vee?

4.Lastly, but most importantly, can you guys recommend any websites/forums for me to check out for further inquiry?

I would also love to hear your experiences if you have, open/closed-wheel, doesn't matter.

Thanks for all the help in advance .

You will need a Motorsport Ireland racing licence to compete, one can be gotten by completing a course at Mondello Park.

The uk is awesome for amateur motorsports, thing is though it gets more expensive. A lot of Irish series would be more cost effective to run in.

Open wheel racing in Ireland has a number of classes, beginning with Formula Vee, the next step up would be Formula Shane (rover k series engine) after that it gets a bit more expensive for the likes of Formula Ford 1600 and the top class Libre where pretty much anything goes.

If it were me i'd try run in Formula Ford 1600 as the car could be used in numerous championships with decent media coverage across Ireland and the UK.

    Thanks for the answer!

As a follow up, would I need another license for racing in the UK or Motorsport IE Racing License can be used for that as well?

After you do the course in Mondello you can apply for a 'National B' license.

You are limited to a maximum engine size of 1650cc for this license.

You can use also use this license in the UK for all MSA racing events.

After you have completed 5 racing events you can upgrade your license to 'National A' which will allow you to race with any engine size.

Do you know any forums which amateur drivers racing in the aforementioned series use?
