Just a quick question about this. Say your on a salary in the mid €40000s. You are therefore paying the top rate of tax for any amount earned over €31000-32000 would you still get the pass at just under half price or is the tax relief calculated on a pro rata basis ie the pass cost €1300 then then you get relief at 20% on approx 2/3 of the price and then 52% relief on the balance or is the over all cost less then 50%?

Assuming you are referring to buying a taxsaver type ticket, you will get the full tax relief in that range. Basically it is deducted from your gross, so you do not pay tax, etc. on that part of your gross, all of which is above the threshold for the higher rate in the scenario you have outlined. The only case where there would be any kind of "pro-rata" or mixed application would be where the salary sacrifice brings your earnings below a threshold, at which point the higher rate will be saved on the portion over that threshold, and the lower rate on the remainder below.

    Hope that makes sense!

it's based on your marginal rate.

once you earn above €35120 (€33800 cut off point + €1320 full price of ticket), you'll get it at approx half price.

Go to www.taxsaver.ie and use the ticket cost calculator there.
