The day after one of the most valuable transport projects for Dublin gets canned, we lose a €100 million per annum Irish organised event to Lisbon due to our crappy infrastructure.

Left Dublin because he couldn't get the state to illegally interfere with hotel prices and doesn't understand how to run a large scale Wifi deployment. No loss - the hotels are already full so its not like we're losing the "millions to the economy" nonsense.

Well said, private company looking for the taxpayer to subsidise his lack of knowledge / organization skills etc etc etc. Good luck to them in Portugal which we all know is a hub of net connectivity and a well run economy etc etc. :D

Internet shouldn't be a problem in Portugal, believe it or not Lisbon is much more advanced than Dublin in that respect. Also a start up capital. The overall economy doesn't mean infrastructure already there isn't better.

The websummit isn't as big a deal as its made out to be. 100m benefit is most certainly an exaggeration.

Have any of you actually been?

That only goes to prove that at the moment Dublin doesn't have hotel capacity to host such a big event.

And btw, I'm not a websummit fan, far from it

Neither do German cities have the capacity to hold Messe's despite the cities being 3 times the size of Dublin. It doesnt make sense for hotels in any city in the World to spend hundreds of millions on additional rooms for cyclical demand. There is a massive shortage of Hotels in the City. Tourism is up 36% in 5 years and thankfully hotels are being built

It is hard for Irish people to get past the bubble that is living in the 26 counties. No one on the radio heard how in Germany hotel rooms double/triple when there is a Messe on the in the City ( massive trade fairs).

The Websummit is a business and it is all about cash. Portugal wasnt chosen because it is a beautiful city or has cheap rooms. It was chosen as Portugal was willing to get the cheque book and give the Websummit a cheque for having it there.

Im sure the Government could have opened up the cheque book and kept the Websummit in Dublin. But I for one are thrilled that in 2016, that the Irish Government are trading tax payers fund to benefit big businesses.

That is the attitude that has made Ireland what it is today. "If you don't like it, fcuk off"

That's exactly the point :) Tourism is up (which is good) but it brought its own challenges with it, namely a temporary hotel rooms shortage

Ah your broad generic statement on Ireland without a single fact! Is the Irish attitude maybe down to the fact we have the fastest growing economy in the developed world over taking China and India? One of the few countries in Europe that is close to balancing its Governments budget? Our country has had unemployment going from 15.1% to 7.8% in just over four years? It took Germany in the early 00's nearly eight years for their unemployment drop to 4%. Their economy has been flat lining for a while now.

Maybe Germany should get the Irish attitude?

The law of supply and demand is working though. The first few hotels in nearly a decade are starting to be built/planned. There is the new one on O'Connell St. Datala are building new hotels. Staycity Im sure are on the look out for new apartments

No, it isn't. Your attitude of instantly blaming is rather a big problem here though. You clearly swallowed Cosgraves PR in full and believe what he claimed

The egotist running it wanted the state to do his organisational work for him. Somewhere else opened their chequebook so he went there.

Tickets used to float around in work, couple of my pals went and I don't think there's much there for the average punter. I guess if you're a manager or looking to get a start up going or something it could be useful to be there, with a lot of people to speak to.

What was the craic with the WiFi, they couldn't manage to get it going properly in the RDS?

Is this millions lost to the economy calculation done by the Garth Brooks algorithm?

That is, computed on the back of the cigarette packet when seething with bitterness that your bluff to take your ball home in a huff was called?
