Town Planning Job Opportunities

    Hi,

I graduated with a MSc Spatial Planning last year and a BSc Geomatics in 2004. Since then I have been working for a local authority in a technical role. I am hoping to get work as a planner and have applied to some local authorities for assistant planner roles but unfortunately did not get shortlisted for interview as competition and the surplus of skilled and experienced labour in this field is massive.

I could try and get work in private practice but this is not as well paid as my current role and would be difficult to pay morgtage and bills etc. I looked at working in the UK but again the pay is a lot less.

Does anyone know if local authorities are considering taking on graduate planners any time soon? Is anyone in a similiar position to me?

    Thanks

Can I ask where you came across the job advert? Is there a central website for local authority planning jobs? Thanks

There is a local govt jobs website but most LAs don't bother with it and just post on their own websites...

    Thanks,

I see the jobs advertised are at assistant planner level which requires 2 years relevant experience. Does anyone know if any local authorities will be taking on graduate planners in the near future?

Has anybody else seen any planning jobs advertised recently in any of the local government planning authorities?

Hi all! Just wondering if you could give me some advice! I have been looking into doing the MRUP in UCD but is it worth it in relation to cost?? Or is there a high demand for planner jobs out there at the moment? I've been out of college for a year and half and have an honors degree in Geography. Need to make a plan but I'm fearful about job prospect after the two years....is it a gamble!

    Hi,

I graduated from planning in DIT 2.5 years ago. Unfortunatley I have not been able to find work in the area of planning. Maybe things will change if the economy improves. From my experience most firms right now are difficult to even get an interview with for graduates and if you are successful most jobs are temporary 3-6 month contracts.
