    Hi All,

I noted that Calor Gas have a special offer including free Boiler at the moment.
My current oil burner is 15 years old, and while working fine, im thinking that it may be on the way out soon and maybe now would be a good time to replace it considering the grants that are also on offer and that the fact that its only about 75% efficient.

Can anyone tell me what the running costs are between gas and oil and also if there's any downside to Gas Central Heating?

Any other useful considerations that i haven't thought of also welcome.
    thanks.

This topic has gotten a hood airing here on Boards. So I will ask 2 questions; why the special offer? Do you think that they will not recoup all costs assiocatiatedd with that or any offer.

If you want to upgrade, then unless you have mains gas, go for a condensing oil boiler with good controls and grant. Maybe go down grant road and improve insulation also.

In any case, you will be a long time recouping the cost af replacing a well tuned existing boiler.

i fully agree on the commercial component, of course they will get their money back, that doesn't mean that its not a good deal for the consumer as if the operating expenses are lower for Gas, and you have to replace boiler at some point anyhow, then is the business case for oil/condensing boiler better than for gas? i guess that's the fundamental question and as my current boiler is 15 years old and technology has moved on, a 20% efficiency improvement in oil usage would pay for itself in 5 years......still a long time i agree.

Also, i wouldnt have mains gas, I would have to install a new tank, i think i may have to replcae my oil tank anyhow, so again, thinking about the long term business case, this could work out...... I'm not sure so asking the questions.

I've done the attic insulation and bead pumping into the walls already....open to further ideas. Much appreciated.
