Tony, Tony Martin all the way. Plenty of time to focus on this after the crash in the TDF.

Why did they call him Tony twice? Is he related to the Djemba Djembas?

"Tony Twice" has a (big) "TT" ring to it .....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

I'm getting more confused. Is he Tony Twice or Tony Tony? Or maybe even Tony Tony Twice.

Definitely Rohan Dennis, he's having a stellar season.

I think you must have that the wrong way round. Surely it's Denis Rohan?
They must be after putting something in the water . . .

    It's a chant:

    "Tony, Tony Martin.
He doesn't waste much time farting.
While Wiggo and Fabu are hither and tither
And Dumolin will be seen to dither
Tony, Tony Martin will win the TT."

They should release it as a single.

    They can call it

    "TT Tony, the one-trick pony"

Boutros Boutros Ghali is my pick.

    Or maybe Tommy D

That's harsh. He has won week long races, stages and worn yellow not just because of his tt skill.

I'll pick Dennis, Rohan Dennis too. Is Tom Dumoulin riding this?

Should that be Tom Tom Dumoulin?

Tom Tomoulin possibly, who can say.

I am surprised there has been so little mention of Rigoberto Uran Uran.

Nah, he is sponsored by Garmin so the use of a competitors name is a no no.

Hopefully Uran wins this evening and then doubles up in the road race.

I actually fancy his chances in the road race.

    1st Tony Martin

    3rd Adriano Malori (+33s)

Poor Tony, Tony Martin will be so upset that he didn't even make the podium.

Ah jaysus. With Tony and Tom Tom not smashing it, this was his chance. No power meter now either.

    500/1 on Paddypower.
You'd be getting a bit nervous about now if you had a cheeky long odds punt on him.

Kiryienka wins it by 9 seconds from Malori. Dumoulin and Tony Martin still to finish but they're both well down, surprisingly.

    Jerome K Jerome Coppel...
Holy Bejeebus how did he finish 3rd???
Chapeau to him. You cud have gotten around 50,000-1 on that podium I reckon 😊😊😊

The podium features 3 relatively small guys, no horsebox-panzerwagons this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

And that wass one of the reasons why the bookies tend to do quite well. Tony Tony Martin & Denis Rohan Dennis must be befuddled with those performances.

VK is a beast of a man and not small at all.

Anyone else notice the handlebar extension setup that Castroviejo had with them mounted under the brake lever bars? I've never seen that before.

Yeah, at 75kg and 182 m tall VVK's got the build of a good time-trialler. He's got fairly serious form at time trials, so it's not that much of a surprise. In any of the grand tours I've seen him in, he's always been in the top 10 for ITTs. Probably because of the likes of Tony Tony, Tom Tom and Ronan Rohan were competing, he wasn't really considered for the podium.

Also, I love the look of the man. He's got a classic intense Slavic face, one that looks like it's seen a few very hard winters on the collective farm.

I don't think Rohan D was proven over such long tt's coming into this, & obviously Dumoulin with the Vuelta & a muscle injury was unlikely to be at his best. Given the absence of Wiggins & Cancellara, Kiryenka's consistency in previous Worlds & that here he narrowly beat Malori & then the hardly star names who came in 3rd & 4th, the real surprise or anomaly is probably just the performance of Martin Tony. If he had an off-day, or his form is simply below-par, it probably was wide open & the supposed snowball of expectation around particularly Dennis was maybe a bit of an illusion. For instance I don't think his hour record was all that amazing, beaten comfortably by Alex Dowsett afterwards.

Not forgetting that VK beat Bertie in the Giro TT earlier this year also and that was a fairly up and down route.

That's not gonna have helped Tony Tony at all. I don't think the broken collarbone in the TDF crash helped his prep either.

VK VK is a machine though when all's said and done.

That's a great way of putting it: we were trying to work out who he looked like - maybe one of the bad guys in one of the Rocky films or something. Or a bit like the Iron Maiden zombie/monster? But it was good to see him smile for once after years of grimacing
I didn't realize he was that tall but yes he has had lots of good TT form over the years, though my best memory of him was winning solo on a mountain stage in the Giro a few years back.
