SKY tv from UK..........outside the EU

With the current speculation about the UK leaving the EU I was wondering how that would effect the existing setup with SKY (UK) operating in this country?
I presume at the moment this is covered by various EU rules on the single market and European broadcasting arrangements. However if the UK leaves the EU then all bets are off and SKY would have to negotiate its position in this country (paying VAT here for a start!), also all the UK channels selling advertising here, how would they be effected?

Sky does pay VAT in Ireland and quite a chunk of change it is.

Given the changes in the EU VAT law it doesnt matter if the UK leave, the VAT i paid at the rate in which the service is consumed rather than the country in which its "created"

Sky are registered as a company now in Ireland so I cant see any drawbacks if it comes to to GB pulling out of the EU

Apart from Sky using it as an 'excuse' to raise prices here....

They never needed an excuse in the past to raise their prices so nothing new :)

I don't think it should have an impact, least not on the platform operation aspect of the operation. Even if it had to gain an authorisation to operate here I don't see Comreg doing anything to prevent that. The days when Comreg and its predecessor actively intervened in the cable/satellite market are long over and aren't coming back.

Where it might have an impact is on the broadcasting side, if the Government were to decide that services operating in the UK deliberately aimed (at least partially) at Ireland had to be licensed in Ireland. This wouldn't be an issue with Sky itself, as it would be in a position to obtain the necessary contracts (and already has an element of Irish programming, if that were necessary to satisfy the BAI). The danger would be that other broadcasters might decide it wasn't worth the hassle and leave the Irish EPG. Nothing could be done about free to air services though, and the satellite hasn't been invented (yet) that can broadcast to the entirety of the UK without also being receivable in Ireland. I don't think the government will go down that road anyway.

What I was thinking about was EU broadcasting and rights issues for services originating outside the EU. Would SKY UK have less protection in Ireland in that situation?..........what would be the implication for RTE etc bidding for sports rights for Ireland?

Little to no change would occur. The rights are commercial contracts between the providers and broadcasters. Rights for a specific geographic area would be valid regardless of the UK's EU status. It really is a non-issue.
