Problems with Windows update.

Recently I have been getting " Download and restart " message on signing out.
I select the "Restart " option..

The following day I check the Windows Update Diagnostic
and I get " Windows Update - Troubleshoot and help prevent computer problems"" .
    2 options appear :
    (1) Windows update and (2) Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
    I click -next.
It runs and I get - Problems found --
    (a) Service registration is missing or corrupt
    (b) Windows update error ( 0x800709(2015-09-21-T-06_12_28P )
    (c) Problems installing recent updates.
All show "Fixed" and a green circle with a tick.

My problem is that if I run it again I Get the same thing but with a different second line.

I have done this 20 times and it still keeps giving different information.

Anyone know what is going on ???

    I'm Lost..
    All suggestions welcome.

I am having trouble with Windows Update lately too. I have tried a number of suggestions I came accross on the Windows websites including a troubleshooter but have been unsuccessful.
Is there an issue with Update or just some people unlucky to be getting hassle?

The usual thing for trying to clear Windows Update issues (not tested this in 10, but I'd be surprised if it's different there) is:
    Open Services.msc or Compmgmt.msc.
Get to the list of Services.
Stop the Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service services.
Go to c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and rename the Download directory to "Download.old" or something like that.
Restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update services.
Run Windows Update again and attempt to install updates as normal.

If this doesn't work, post the following:
    • Version, edition and architecture of your Windows install (Eg "Windows 10 Professional, 32-bit")
    • When you last successfully installed an update
    • What, if any, other steps to resolve the problem you have tried
    • Do you have an available restore point to undo the last change you made to your computer?

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on August 6th last and it worked away with no problems for a few months. Over the past few months it has become a pain in the butt....runs for hours after any updates on attempted Restart(s) I have to either do a hot shutdown or press Ctrl+Alt+Del and play around with it to get it back to "normal", it will then run away fine again until the next batch of updates. Occasionally some of the icons on the Desktop are/go blank which entails some more black magic.

Here is the last update history from "Black (every second) Tuesday" which needed some more gymnastics, everything will be fine now again for two weeks or so until the next updates.

I also have a Windows 7 Laptop which will remain so until either I or the Laptop or Windows 7 dies.

edit: The two updates were KB3124263 & KB890830
